BMW V8 S65
I was curious if anyone has considered this motor for a swap, or know of anyone who has done this swap. 4.0L 8400rpm 12:1 compression ITBs 414hp/295tq. It won a lot of awards. I'm not sure how it ranks for BMW reliability, but considering it can be found with a 6speed, it could be a cool swap.

semi-related (but not really), if I ever decide to yank the motor/transmission out of my E39 540i (M62TUB44 + Getrag 420G), someone can make a fun toy with it...

Issues with rod bearings and throttle actuators.

What about a V10 S85 lol.

Neat for sure, but what does a 500 horsepower BMW V10 weigh compared to a 500 horsepower LS? I don't see a performance reason to do this, but the cool factor is off the charts...lol

They get terrible gas mileage though, the LS motors do much better in this regard. Rod bearings and throttle actuators - if you're doing a swap you can address these in the process, otherwise I think they're pretty solid motors. If you're looking for something unique and exotic, this would fit the bill. They sound amazing. But it would not beat an LS as an ideal candidate. LS is lighter, produces just as much power, smaller, cheaper, better mileage (as if that matters at this point), and much more aftermarket support already there. |
I’m not interested in the swap, but thought it would be cool.

I thought this would be cool to discuss over the popular LS. This V8 seems fundamentally different than a LS motor because of the revs and ITB. Having 1800 rpms over the LS3 might be a big deal to some people, along with the rev differences and throttle response. This motor also seems more compact than other DOHC motors like the Coyote or Lexus V8s, but without looking at them side by side I can’t be certain. |
I had a 2012 M3 with the S65, i'd prefer it with the DCT over a 6 speed any day. The M3 DCT shifts as fast, if not faster, than a GTR R35 and they make an adapter for the BMW DCT trans to 2jz engine already.
Rod bearing and throttle body actuators issues are real, and quite frequent, but both easy fixes. Even when the engine is in the car. Most people do the bearings from the bottom, and throttle actuators take about 45 mins to do both. |
