Beginner Mods
 

So I just bought a 2013 scion frs and am trying to get into the car scene. I want to start off with the cosmetic stuff then move onto some light performance parts. I don't want to get too "ricy" nor too noisy. Any suggestions?

Cant go wrong with a weighted shift knob or a license plate relocate kit. First things I added to my 86.

Drive it for a while. Then decide what you want. No need t make a shopping list up based on other peoples preferences.

drive the stock car for a while first and do tons of research.

I had to change the wheels, tires and catback first, with coilovers almost immediately after that. Those had the most dramatic effect in the right direction for me. Anything else after that kinda follows what the above 2 said, drive it for a while and make changes accordingly.

For me, the next priority after the exterior changes was to make the interior a better place to be in so I installed some tan leatherette seat covers, tons of carbon detailing, alcantara, shift knob. Now it's genuinely a nice place to spend time in.

Any wheels I got would just be for looks anyway. All my mods reveal my inner ricer.

This is great advice. Drive the car stock until you can identify something specific you feel should be changed. Modding for the sake of modding is pointless, IMO.

As for cosmetic mods, since you're planning on doing cosmetic stuff first, why don't you tell us a little about the kind of look you want? Hard to recommend cosmetic mods to do when we don't know what you want the car to look like.

same here but you CAN tell the difference in ride harshness with a heavier wheel. I think I'll be going for a lighter wheel in the future

Just go get the BRG 86. Get spacers and lower it with TRD springs and you're good to go.

If the OP is in a position to do their own maintenance, try that first. I personally find it more satisfying to do my own work with both maintenance and modifications. Doing the maintenance gets you comfortable working on items of consequence on the car.

If you got that itch to make it your own, some easy and relatively cheap mods include fumoto oil drain valve, jdm style undertrays (ok, not so cheap, but easy), interior bits such as shift knobs or phone mounts, an OFT (also some $$$), brake master cylinder brace, reusable air filter, shifter bushing (this ones a bit of a PITA), transmission and differential oils, brake pads/fluid, convex side mirrors, antenna (shark fin or shorty), uhhhhh... I'm sure there's a lot I'm missing.
