SBD500X turbo kit help
I'm buying the sbd500x turbo kit for my 2016 scion frs(automatic) soon and I just wanted to confirm or have someone help me with some questions. So right now the only mods on my frs are tein coilovers and the mxp comp rs catback exhaust. I recently ordered a catch can and crash bar. Should I get an oft or ecutek to tune the frs after all the installations. Also what other supporting mods do I need and if I do get an oft/ecutek do I still need to go to a tuner shop.

WHat are your goals with the kit? You can get an OpenFlash Tablet with an e-tune pretty cheap and have it be reliable so long as you're not tracking the car. If the e-tune isn't great, then get a dyno tune. ECUtek will take your much farther, but if you're just doing a WOT pull here and there on the interstate, I don't think the additional features/cost are merited.
Don't misunderstand, ECUtek's Racerom features are always the best. But if it's just basic bolt on power and reliability for a DD, OpenFlash Tablet and an e-tune will get you there. |
You will need either an OFT or an EcuTek, yes. That’s just the hardware interface to let you tune the car, so you will need a tune along with it. For OFT I know there’s a tune available for that kit, but that’s all I know. I dunno if it’s free or who it’s from or what. EcuTek is more expensive and more robust. You need the EcuTek hardware, a license and a tune. You can find someone local to dyno tune it if they can do EcuTek, or get a remote tune from one of several places that offer it.
You don’t NEED other supporting mods. You can install your kit, tune it and go drive. Upgrade other things later as needed. If you go for more power later, you’ll end up needing to upgrade clutch, fueling, brakes, but none of it is immediately necessary. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
I installed the kit myself a few months ago. I used the open flash tuner to tune mine with shiv. The tune isn’t free and it’s done via data logs and emails. I installed dual catch cans and upgraded the clutch and an oil cooler.

short term i just want to plug and play the kit. Long term/later on i plan on rebuilding the fa20 and going on e85.

any recommendations on boost gauges or like gauges in general?

I also have a phone mount on my windscreen and use the ecutek app's dashboard to show stuff like temps, AFR and boost which I like a lot. |

If you pick up a used OFT for 350$ and get a custom tune for 250$ your at 600$, but Ecutek bundle with tune is only 900$ and you will get a better tune and many more features. Also the turn around time and customer support from xero-limit and delicious tuning is way better then Openflash. Openflash may have gotten their sh*t together since i had them do my NA tune a year ago, but it took 1 initial tune + 6 revisions at 3-4 weeks per revision. DT was 24-48hours and mike from xero-limit was 24hour, he got me 3 in one day at one point and 2 a few other times. Went above and beyond to really dial in my drive-ability and safely maximize performance with my WMI so it took 11 revisions. Yes, i have had 3 custom tunes from 3 different tuners. 1st was an all out NA build tuned by Openflash, 2nd was sprintex 75mm pulley tuned by DT, and last was sprintex 72.5mm pulley with WMI tuned by Xero-limit. |
I would go with ecutek from the start for any FI build.
The 2 most important things: Proper install Solid Tune For Turbo Builds -Gauges to monitor Boost Pressure and AFR -Oil Cooler is highly recommended -Keep the boost low on pump. No more than 9-10PSI max |
Don't forget to buy a second header for when your first one cracks in two.

Does anyone know if the HKS manifolds are any better? I’m debating on these two kits. Thanks |
