Street driving Re: Torque dip

I just wanted to poll you guys on this one.

Everyone knows about the torque dip and where it lies.

Does it make shifting between 3000 and 4000 kind of a bother for anyone else? Seems like if you drive half spirited (like I do on the streets when it's calm) you shift up around 3500~ and then the power just drops when you are in the next gear and press the pedal.

Can't wait to flatten the curve out a bit in the future. Once I'm done breaking in the car I probably won't shift under 4500 other than 1 - 2. I find 1st gear is pretty short and I want to just shift out of it at ~2500 tops.

I normally shift / the computer shifts for me at around 2200. I have my rev light set at 2300 and generally avoid hitting it. Spirited for me is probably upshifting right before the start of the dip -- 3300. Problem solved.

Caning it is probably getting beyond the torque dip in 1st or 2nd and then revving high enough (though not necessarily to HP peak or redline) to come down just after the end of the dip -- 4700. Problem solved.

Just driving around and commuting to/from work, yes.

Spirited = 3300. Caning the life out of it = 6000 or 6500 I'd guess.

I guess we have different definitions of these terms. I find it hard to shift before 3-4k rpm in daily driving. Spirited would be 5-6k for me.

I'm blaming the previous habits of driving a motor that would rev to 9k, and the fact I like hearing the Boxer rumble. :(

CBR600RR 08-01-2012 02:17 PM

^same here I guess... except I am used to 15,000rpms - Nanny driving my bike involves shifting before 8,000rpm

Bonburner 08-01-2012 02:44 PM

That's why I try to shift right before the dip :/

Draco-REX 08-01-2012 02:49 PM

I had to re-learn my shift points. Having driven turbo Subarus for the past 5 years, I ;earned to keep it in the 3K-4K range because that's where the turbos liked to live. But with the BRZ, I've had to learn to drive it like two different engines. Shift at 3.5K for around-town driving, keep it above 5K for hard driving.

It doesn't make the shifting any harder for me. Nothing harder than any other car I've driven. But I can definitely feel the torque dip. I can't really feel there is a dip, but it feels more like the torque flattens. Like RPM goes up, up, up, and I feel power more, more, more. At one point, power stops going up even when the RPM keeps going up. After 1k RPM or so, I start to feel the power go up again. It kind of feels like AC just turned on at 3k RPM.

it can be readily driven around, but quit shifting at 2200 or I'm gonna reclaim your car for the good of the community.

I rarely shift before 4500 and only do so to avoid hanging above 3500ish for cruising.

Has anyone else noticed it takes a 6-4 downshift to accelerate around anything on the freeway???

A couple times I grabbed 5th and was just like :-((( needs more down shift

7thgear 08-01-2012 03:58 PM

i don't understand the concern with the torque dip

if you're racing, you shouldn't drop below 4000

if you're on the street, you shouldn't go above 4000

95% of street driving is done at something silly like 60 horsepower and 30% throttle

really guys, non issue, unless you're a dyno-graph connoisseur and are on a magical quest to find the most perfect graph

I couldn't disagree more

ngabdala 08-01-2012 04:38 PM

That's pretty normal for a non turbo 4 banger.
