BRZ advise on changing front pipe or not
Hi all - I current have the following setup: Stock overpipe -> Stock header -> Invidia catless front pipe non-resonated -> Nvidia N1
I have run this setup for 2 years and even though i know its loud and drones like hell, i got used to it and i love it. So, I recently purchased an openflash tablet and Tomei catless UEL headers. And as i understand, this set up is gonna be super loud. Pretty much i will have the same set up as this guy 'https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pMSFkpCklVk' which sounds good, i think it will be too loud for my tasting as it sounds too raspy. So before installing the Tomei headers, im considering replacing my invidia catless front pipe non-resonated. This is where i need some advise: 1- Get an Invidia Catless front pipe resonated 2- Get a Berk High flow catted Front Pipe Im not sure which one will help with the rasp, also both are about the same price. Any input will be helpful, Thank you! |
I personally would go for the high flow cat option. Will help with rasp and at least reduce the stink of an non cat system without any significant reduction in power gain.

Sorry to give bananas when you asked for oranges, but I'd put the heads in and make a decision after that. You might like the noise and flames. Ull be running a full system so get a dyno tune.

I had a catless non resonated Invidia FP with my Tomei UEL. Was able to bare it for about a year but it always made some nasty rasp at certain loads. Switched to the resonated version and it sounds PERFECT. However that was with the R400 not the N1. I imagine the N1 would be god awful to drive with a test pipe.

Go to exhaust shop and get them to weld the longest resonator they can fit in the front pipe and mid pipe.
The resonators will kill the drone. It will still be loudish, it will just not sound like a raspy buzz box, it will be well deeper, and howl nice up high in the RPM.. I would start with a 15"(bigger?) resonator in the midpipe, test and adjust with another in the front pipe if required. Cheap and effective Everything back from the header is simple to get right in relation to flow, tone and volume, the hard part to get right for your application is the header design. Have fun |
I have a 70mm over front/over pipe combo from Ultimate Racing. Zero drone and rasp from a resonanator setup. I could only imagine a catted setup being quieter and without the stink if running gas.

Thanks for all the input, I would have preferred the invidia catted front pipe but it runs about 450$+ :S
I purchased the Berk catted front pipe, it looks like this one will help with the rasp (which is the part that im most concern about) and not too expensive. |
If it is still too droney/raspy get a exhaust shop to fit a resonator to your mid pipe, should cost around $100.
From my experience a cat will remove some volume but not do alot for the tone. Good luck with your adventures into sound and resonance. |
Hi everyone - So, 3 weeks ago, i got the Tomei UEL headers and berk catted front pipe installed together with the OFT Stage 2 tune. Car feels great and im glad i went this route (performance wise).
However, the rasp is still not much of my taste. I want some deep & very little rasp kind of tone. Right now, i think i do not have a resonator, just a cat in the front pipe. Im checking out my options, to help reduce the rasp, so i think of the following: 1- Get a dual resonated front pipe from HKS, however, i will not have a cat if i go this route and need to pass state inspection in January. 2- Customize my setup and add a resonated somewhere, anyone have any experience with this? Any other thoughts help, thank you. |
Hi all - Following on my post above; reason for the rasp was because my invidia n1 catback had 3 bad gaskets and it was leaking very bad. I got it fixed and Its a bit better but still too much drone and rasp for me.
I went to a resonator shop and they tell me that they can fit a walker resonator in my mid pipe for about $250. Does this sound good in terms price and potentially reducing the drone/rasp. My other option is to get the invidia q300 which i know for sure it will kill most of the drone and rasp. |
