Exhaust crackle

I heard so many of the newer cars with loud crackle exhaust sound. Over the weekend, I heard this on a Jag F-Type, 911 and Ford Fusion ST. How do manufacturer do this? I recall reading something about they program added drops of fuel to go into the exhaust and detonate for the loud crackle pop sound. Any engineers amongst us to explain this to me.

And with many aftermarket tunes they can increase the volume and number of pops and crackles...I own a Focus RS and my tune has the additional pops. Its incredibly loud and borderline annoying. The boxer rumble is a much nicer noise than backfires and pops (yes, coming from a Focus RS owner)

You mess with timing and add extra fuel. Some engines can deal with it better than others. Many will argue but my statement is it is a bad idea with the boxer engines in these cars. They are not designed to deal with it and you are just inviting problems.

I am also biased though since last month a bunch of BMW "tuner" bros moved into the house 3 doors down from me. I am sick and tired of listening to cheap ass fart can exhausts and cars tuned to make noise but not perform going POP POP POP POP at all hours of the day and night. My car is not quiet but damn those things are annoying.

It's ignition retard on the exhaust side during decel usually. It also gets old quick, like having grilled cheese for lunch and dinner for a week. Except with this, you're making everyone else around you eat grilled cheese at the same time you do.

DUDE it is 2019 you mean the ignition is "developmentally challenged"!

I think the exhaust crackles and pops can be fun sounding when ripping around, but it would drive me nuts if it was going on the entire time I was driving.

Delicious tuning has a pops & bangs map that you can turn on and off in the car as you wish. https://www.delicioustuning.com/PNB

Seems like an ideal solution to get fun sounds that can be turned off when you don't want to piss off neighbors/police.

I've gotten crackles and pops on downshifts when I had a muffler delete

The only pops and crackles I'd ever go out of my way to add to a car :) #LeadSled

Yeah... as a dad with a daughter on the autism spectrum I'd appreciate keeping the developmental humor to a minimum, thank you, cheers

As a Dad with a son that has advanced OPD (Obsessive personality disorder) which has been barely controlled by medication for the last 20 years I find nothing offensive in a casual joke that is not directed at an individual. You deal your way and let me deal in mine OK?

if you have the TRD exhaust, you'll hear a pop/crackle once a while ^^

Little. More of a burble that the pops that people are after. When I think of "pops" I am thinking more the rapid backfire type sound.

yep it certainly isn't in the same league as F-RS & bimmer pops but I do get a pretty respectable pop on some downshifts ;)

Yep, I get crackles and pops at partial throttle on deceleration with my muffler delete.
