Looking into buying used exhaust. What should I look out for?

Hi all,

I'm looking to buy a used exhaust for around $600 CAD. I reside in Toronto so I'm somewhat worried about rust being an issue and I'm not sure when it becomes a problem or not.

The two options I currently have are:

1. AVO 3 inch catback exhaust $500 CAD

2. MXP Comp RS catback exhaust $550 CAD

I was wondering if the rust on either exhausts would be an issue and if the prices are reasonable. I'm looking for an exhaust that's not too loud but will have a nice deep sound with little drone.

Thank you!

Edit: Turns out the rust in the pictures of the AVO exhaust is not actually rust but rather, the exhaust needs to be cleaned. Will update with new pictures of the cleaned exhaust once buyer provides them

The AVO is supposed to be a stainless system and should not possibly look that bad. Stay away.
The MXP looks about right as far as discoloration goes. A bit of surface rust on a steel system is fine and to be expected. Looks like they retail for about $900 in Canada so not a great deal but not horrible either.

The MXP is reasonably priced, if you can bargain a little it would sweeten the deal. It's on the more aggressive side of catbacks in terms of volume. If you aren't modifying any other exhaust parts the MXP would not be overly loud.

Something like a Invidia Q300, R400 or Perrin 2.5" resonated would fit your requirements nicely. .

I vote MXP if the rest of your exhaust is stock. That AVO exhaust looks like it sat in an acid tank and then was left on the lawn for 1-2 years before the found it.

I'd suggest you buy a new one. That way, you can get one that would more likely to fit your criteria. Besides, it's a one time purchase (usually).

Go invidia! Best bang for your buck, there's a reason they're so popular.

I'm actually getting an OFT this week as well and likely will add headers in a year or so when my warranty is over so I don't won't it to be too obnoxious at that point. Would leaving the stock exhaust and only buying new headers make an adequate difference in the exhaust node and sound?

If you go with a catless header then yes, it is noticeable on a otherwise stock exhaust.

It would make more sense to decide on a header, and go from there. Catbacks change the sound and provide little to zero gains.

Sorry for a thread jack, but since it is moderately related and I'm sure lots of people have wondered this, how loud does the exhuast become by just doing headers? Would a catback even be necessary?

Perrin 2.5in
Invidia Q300
