I live in MA found my BRZ at a CT dealer

Hi guys,

Finally, I found my BRZ and we are very close to an agreement with a dealer in CT. I live in Boston, MA and the dealer told me that they can handle the registration (they quoted me for the MA taxes). Should I really trust them (the dealer is 100 miles from Boston)?
I don't want to deal with any paperwork or test (ie smog test etc) when I am back in MA. Is it possible to drive the car out of the dealer the same day without any issues?

I really appreciate any information since I will potentially go there on Monday.

Thanks

I don't see why it would be an issue. You've never bought a car out state right?

Make sure they can take care of the dmv paper work so it's one less hassle on your end.

Also call your insurance company ahead of time to get it covered. Most dealerships want to have you insured the moment you drive off the lot.

Besides that happy driving.

I bought both my BRZ and wife's WRX in neighboring state. I live in Utah and purchased both from a dealership in Colorado eight months apart. The dealership collected the sales tax rate for Utah in both instances and I paid the registration fees to the Utah DMV in person.

The first time, they didn't collect the correct sales tax rate for Utah and I had to cover the difference when I registered the vehicle. Be prepared and know the correct sales tax rate for your State and County (if they differ per county).

CT sales tax is 6.35% and Massachusetts is 6.25%. Hope this helps.

I’ve bought all my cars across the lake which happens to be out of state.

The process is simple and the dealership should know what to do and help you along the way.

Call your insurance company before hand. Get a price quote and have them save the quote for you.

The dealership you buy the car from will give you a temp registration and inspect it for you in that state (for you. CT)
They will try to calculate the sales tax for the state you live in and factor that into the sale price.
At the dealer you call your insurance company back and have them fax over the coverage on your new car

Proceed to enjoy your car as you drive off the lot.
The dealer will mail you a check and all the sales paperwork and you take that to your dmv where you hand them whatever checks and paperwork you’ve been given. Bring a blank check because there always seems to be a balance you have to pay. My most recent case $142 for example. You get your new plates and You’re all set.

Good luck. Enjoy the new car.

Everyone's experience with buying out of state is different, but all the stories seem to be similar and reasonable. I bought my (very slightly used) BRZ in Tennessee and drove it home to North Carolina that same day. I remember paying Tennessee sales tax which is about half the rate for North Carolina, and rejoicing that I wasn't going to have to pay sales tax in North Carolina. You of course must have valid insurance for the drive home, but I was automatically bound over and covered for that after hours trip until I could call my agent the next morning.

The whole thing was simple and easy in the extreme. Surely I can't be the only buyer to have such a dream transaction?

Best wishes for enjoying your new toy, I mean car. You will be very happy together!

Thank you all!

Actually, things changed slightly but it was really interesting!

On Saturday we had great email traffic with the dealer (100 miles out of state) and I was pretty sure that I will come to an agreement with them the other day. But at 11:50 PM I received an alert (I registered and saved some cars I was following) from "Subaru of New England" Website. Notification was "Price has changed on the vehicle you saved". The vehicle was BLUE and the price drop was almost $3000! It happens very rarely but I have seen even higher drops! Best point was it was only 5 miles far from my home - in MA!

Was a though night :) First thing in the morning I went to the dealer, told them that I don't want to play games, show them the notification and we discussed on the numbers. Shortly we came to a deal and I paid a deposit.

Now, I am waiting for the car from Port Davisville RI to arrive at the dealer in MA (1-10 days).

Congrats!

BTW, I bought my BRZ in NH and I lived in MA in 2013. Don't remember the details but it was trouble free with buying out of state.

Welcome and you are going to love this car!

I've bought about 5 cars out of state; to and from a variety of states. Each experience has been different as each state is different and dealers knowledge of other states requirements varies a lot. Some hire external registration people in your state to handle it and I've found this to be the best and most certain experience. While it doesn't seem an issue anymore, I wouldn't be at all hesitant about buying from an out of state dealer.
