How many miles is the stock engine air filter supposed to last?
 

Although my car is a 2014 Scion FR-S, I'm a VERY low-mileage driver (still under 15K miles) and have never changed the stock engine air filter.

I supposed I'll upgrade to the K&N model:

But I only want to upgrade once the existing stock filter has outlived its usefulness.

I would imagine that air filters isn't something that gets "stale" over time, so it has to be mileage-based when it comes to replacement intervals. I live in the Seattle region.

I think it more or less just depends on wear and if you drive in particularly dusty/polluted conditions, the best way i'd say would be to pop it out and take a look

I've heard that you should hold it up to a light and see if any light shines through. It not, then it's time to change.

The current maintenance schedule for normal driving conditions recommends replacement at 30k miles.

I always say " If it's not black, put it back"

I swap mine out with a OEM style paper elementment (2017) every 6 months.

I also clean it every month by tapping it out.

They are a cheap maintenance replacement part.

It is dusty here.

Non OEM style replacement filters are a gimmick in my opinion, plus the oiled variety clog up extremely quick, the OEM filter in my NA 86 is not a restriction and it actually filters out fine dust and stays quite efficient over time.

Since it's generally not dusty in the Seattle area, your filter is probably good for another 15,000 miles - :thumbsup:

I'm always in awe someone says how long can ____ should last.
Air filters are like your butt wiping.
Some people are set to a timely and numeric schedule. 2 shits a day and 4 wipes.
Other people wipe till they feel clean
Other people say they wipe but smell like shit all day.
Some savages claim they don't need to wipe cause they can pinch a turd clean off.
Others wipe, and take a peek at the wipe. If it's dirty keep on wiping till they bleed.

It's the amount of air drawn through and the amount of particulates in the air.
Highly variable and down to local conditions.

If you did a lot of driving during the forest fires last fall, then I'd advise a new filter soonish.
If it was parked up then, shouldn't be a problem.

But there was significant fire smoke the year before too.
