Very loud shifter rattle.
Hello all.
I have 18k on my 17 86. It has had this very loud and vibrating shifter rattle since it was new and got progressively worse. The dealer replaced the shifter assembly and it shifted tighter for 2 weeks but the noise never went away. There is something from the clutch, throw out bearing, clutch fork, clutch, fly wheel sending vibrations in to the input shaft to the shifter. Gear changes are fine. Clutch when depressing and it engages feels sloppy and clunky noises can be heard. I’ve given many videos to the service director had many people listen to them. I got Toyota involved and now the rude service director worked with the Toyota field tech to clam that this is normal operation. They also blacklisted me to all dealers in town to say if I came in to confirm that this is normal opperation. I even went to Subaru dealer as I know the master tech there and service director. They can’t officaly say anything in writing as it’s cross badge. But both agree it’s not normal nor have they had anyone come in with these issues. Can anyone tell me if the twins share the exact same transmission? Is anyone in the Vegas/Henderson area with a 2017 86 that has a stock clutch/flywheel/transmission please send me a PM I would like to compare and take a video of it to see how normal operation this is. On top of everything else they have not pulled the transmission or inspected any of the parts associated with this issue. Thank you |
Do you have a short shifter installed?
Would you like to share you videos? humfrz |
Negative it is completely stock.
I will once I’m able to get home from my late shift today. I’ve got 3 videos that show it clearly. Anything above 4K rpm through all 6 gears although 1-4 is the loudest. |
I have your same car my17 (but BRZ) and i have all your symptoms since always. Now 33k Km, it's all normal

My OEM 2017 86 shifter doesn't rattle

Hello,
Are you positive it’s the shifter and not the accelerator pedal? My 2018 86 has a relatively loud metallic rattle that emanates from the accelerator pedal when my foot is not on it depending on the texture of the road. This particular issue is common and I’ve come to just ignore it, though some have “fixed it” with some padding. |
No accelerator pedal rattle for me either
|
No I’m positive it’s the shifter what ever is causing this vibration the shifter vibrates and visibly moves a lot so much that you can’t carry on a normal conversation while driving I have to turn up my radio to drown it out especially when driving on the high way.

Not sure how relevant it is for your car but there was a TSB sent out for this issue on the 13s.
May be worth checking out. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/attac...1&d=1367276498 |
I had this too but after I installed a perrin shifter insert and transmission bushing, it's much better.

Clutch raddel link [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVN980ZhqGA[/ame] Clutch noise and vibration when clutch peddle is pushed in and clutch dis engages the tud and vibaration can be felt and seen in the shifter movement. [ame]https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pHqlNm9W53g[/ame] Note everything is stock. The TFS agent states this is all normal opperation nothing has been pulled or inspected. Also I have driven a brand new 17 last year with the service director and none made my noises. |
Well, Zentec, I can't sort much out from the videos - :iono:
That little squeaky sound, when you tap the clutch pedal, may be coming from a dry clutch fork. Hopefully, others will be able to. If the sound that you are hearing, is NOT normal, about the only way to "fix" it, is to open it up and replace the worn parts. humfrz |

Then one day I picked up my old man from the airport and he wanted to drive my 86 home. He went WOT in every gear banging it off the redline a couple times and never once did it rattle in 2nd gear. Around that time I read a post from Tcoat suggesting for folks to change up their shifting grip technique and I realized my pops had his wrist & fingers in a more relaxed position than I did. Ever since then I've adjusted how I shift especially from 1st to 2nd and for the past 30,000 miles I haven't gotten any 2nd gear crunch or any rattles even while banging her off the redline. So from what I've been able to gather, the rattles probably come from some combination of the gearbox design (low NVH refinement and shifting feel being prioritized over "smooth" shifts - very similar complaints from other cars with AISIN derived manual boxes S2000/Miata), the quality of the shift itself, the linkages naturally being made of multiple metal pieces and at least partly from the transmission just breaking in. Also the shifter will move and vibrate from using the clutch and just going WOT in general so that is pretty normal... http://i.imgur.com/Z8dsP.gif |
