replacing BRZ key/fob

I managed to lose my primary key, somehow, so I'm driving around with the spare key, and would like to get my remote back. Is a Subaru dealer my only option for having a new key made?

Yep pretty much.
Bring some lube cause they are going to duck you hard once you get the bill.

be sure you have the little 'dog tag' with numbers on it that came with the keys. i was told when i bought mine that without it, the price for replacement keys goes up drastically.

I got my car CPO and it didn't come with that tag :( I think I do have the security code though, I remember the salesman mentioning it and saying don't lose this as he handed it to me so I stapled it to the folder the paperwork came in.

When I bought BRZ tS, salesman told me that don't lose this key since it's costing $350 for a new key. I have kept a spare in the locker.

new cars are getting nuts for replacement keys. it's starting to become part of my haggling concept-- either the car comes with 2 keys, or the seller needs to take off the cost of the replacement key, as well as a few hours of my time to go get it. i do this in the hopes that they go through the hassle so i don't have to.

Yep, they have to do a process through STIS that removes the old key id and replaces it with the new one. You could find someone that "clones" keys or a locksmith certified on newer vehicles but the price may be the same or a little bit cheaper.

In a way that's a good thing, makes it harder to clone keys without some STIS or techstream license that can't just be pirated.

i do find it ironic that cars are getting more boring and less exciting, and even harder to work on, but replacement key costs are continually rising.

Your spare is just the key?

I just had my fob cloned for $240, everything works but the trunk button which i didn't care about. But yeah not cheap. Dealers wanted 500 bucks, pricks.

If Star wars has taught me anything, it's that clones are bad.

I got my OEM replacement key from https://www.subarupartsdeal.com/ then had it cut at my local locksmith and saved a good amount of $. I like buying from them because their prices are so much lower than dealer prices.

Why isn't the 'spare key' called the 'secondary key'?

This is registration procedure with Techstream:

There are two codes. Open doors and immobilisercode.
