Audio upgrades on a GT86
What have you all done with audio upgrade options on a GT86?
I am looking at swapping out the existing head unit including door speakers and adding a sub or two etc. Looking for recommendations, thoughts? |

There is a section that may be more in line with your question. http://www.ft86club.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=27 I put a Kenwood DNX (something) in my 2013 a few years back. It works well. Personally I feel the OEM speakers are just fine. My Country & Western music sounds "real good" - :D humfrz |
Everybody on here advocates for a brand calle OEM audio plus. I have not done it, but if I did thTs what I would get. It's a complete system made specifically for twins.

Yes, many people have done all kinds of audio upgrades. All depends how much you want to spend and what kind of upgrade you want.
I for one just added a sub and amp. Nothing crazy just a nice 200 watt amp and 10" sub in a generic enclosed box. New amp was $80. Sub box was $40. Amp working kit $25. Line level conveter $15. The sub was from my previous car. I would highly recommend you look up your local car audio store and take a stroll inside. |

The only thing I can say good about it, is it's plug and play. |
I installed a Pioneer 4400 (Wireless CarPlay FTW) and a JL Audio stealthbox. Everything sounds much better now.

My audio upgrade for my FR-S:
https://www.etymotic.com/consumer/he...on/er20xs.html With those in and stock system cranked up some it sounds decent enough, as good as it can with a much louder than stock exhaust system... For me the FR-S is just not worth investing anything in the audio system beyond stock, way too much cabin noise (even stock) to be a good audio platform - a system delete makes more sense than an upgrade. The ER20XS allow you to play the system loud enough to get beyond the loud noise floor of the vehicle and provide an 'okay' listening experience. Damping the interior space and lowering the noise floor would be #1 priority before doing any kind of equipment upgrade on an FR-S. Even when not listening to music I have the ER20XS in for every drive... interior noise is too dang loud in it and it will effect your hearing which you will really notice on long trips. My Nissan Frontier on the other hand, will be getting some audio upgrades on it... much better space for audio sound quality - stock system sounds absolutely great with high resolution FLAC playing from my tablet/with external DAC/amp feeding the aux port. Add in more sound damping and it'll compete with my home stereo setup. |
If you could provide a budget and goals that would help. I went all-in and built a MECA competition system, but that’s not for everybody.

I have the OEM audio plus kit, and I love it. Definitely recommend it if you want to just buy a solution and not have to source a bunch of different parts to put together. I had mine installed at OEM audio plus and they went ahead and even tuned the frequency response for my specific car with their microphone array so it sounds perfect. I know it's expensive, but you're paying for the extensive R&D these guys have done and I think it's well worth it.

I installed the Kenwood-KMM-BT322U. No CD drive means it's very short - I replaced my lower useless cubby with it to free up the double din up top for gauges. This head unit has an external rear USB that I routed into the glove box. Plays music, uses factory speakers, and most importantly, has an orange color that matches factory FRS HVAC glow

I'm in the same boat at the moment. I'm upgrading my phone to the galaxy s10+ so basically its time to get a wireless android audio head unit to take advantage of that.
Currently looking at the Pioneer AVH-4400NEX. I'm waiting for the next time it goes up on sale to pick it up. Not in a hurry so I can hunt for a good deal. Once I get the head unit I may just pick up the OEM+ sound. |
