Will you stay with the 86 brand for the future ?
I know this sounds like I work in Toyota's marketing department but I'm genuinely interested.
With the new 86 generation confirmed by Toyota Australia Exec's who claim its coming. How many of you are going to stick with the 86 brand, we all know these types of vehicles entry level sports cars. The turn around for ownership is not very long as the people who tend to buy them (20-25 yo's) sell them on to a younger driver looking for his/her first taste of a sporty car, and upscale to something more expensive or go for something completely different. I feel like for me all it will take is the same concept but with an engine worthy of the chassis im not asking for big power just an engine that's going to make the car exciting, perhaps more displacement to address the number 1 issue with the platform which is Torque. I don't think anybody would complain if the car never see's a boxer engine again despite the low centre of gravity preaching. |
I certainly will. I forsee a 3-4 year life for my 86, as I’m on schedule to do 50,000km annually. I hope to trade it in on something exactly the same - small, light, enjoyable to drive ~200km/day, not stupidly expensive to run, rear wheel drive, etc.

I fear your Toyota Australia Exec's may be talking out their arse, hell, nothing official is being talked about in J, except for 3rd hand hearsay. But, while we are speculating....if Toyota releases a IL4 with manual transmission, and if it didnt look like arse or the Zupra then I would look at it. Actually, if Toyota released the same body and interior tomorrow, but, with a IL4, turbo, a OEM engine and transmission that could handle tweaking to 200kwatw and around 300nm of torque I would get him on task tomorrow. I imagine it would cost between $45-55k AUD. The Zupra, which we still don't have a fixed price, seems to be floating around $75-85k AUD, but as stated, thats just based off what the dealers are crystal balling, using the Z4 as the base stock crystal ball. :burnrubber: |
1- Nothing has been confirmed by anybody as far as a "second gen" goes
2 - The only quasi official statement was from Subaru of America that the car was not being discontinued in 2020 as rumour had stated. 3 - The average buyer (at least in north America) for the new ones is closer to 35 to 40 4 - If the boxer disappears the car disappear it is as simple as that. There will never be a Toyota or Subaru solo version |

If they do stay with the boxer I hope they just do a FA20T. That would require a new drivetrain though. I would still be happy to pay $45-50k AUD. As long as it stays RWD and has a manual option, I'll drop it like a hot potato if they go AWD and/or auto. |
A) I wouldn't buy another if something happened to mine.
B) I wouldn't but another if it didnt have a boxer. C) I'm older and have basically committed myself to having this car until I'm gone. Your "research" is very skewed one way. |
I plan on hording them! I will be looking into buying another one for the street soon. AKA track car parts car. lol.
|
no. I'll keep mine, but I don't see me buying another one unless it is the only interesting thing out there and mine gets totalled.
There are just too many cars to try to buy the same thing again. |
I'd go with the BRZ. In my area finding a manual 86 is ridiculously difficult. Dealers just don't stock them and those for sale are priced ridiculously high.
Plus, it's basically a BRZ anyway with swapped badges. Manufactured by Subaru, the Boxer engine, etc. That being said, I currently daily my '15 FR-S. It's the one I originally wanted due to cheaper price vs the BRZ and being a more focused car. Sent from my Nexus 5X using Tapatalk |

They said they were going to build an inexpensive, lightweight, low COG, NA, entry level, coupe and that is exactly what they designed, built and marketed. If people were expecting or wanting a two door WRX that is on them not Toyota/Subaru. Start pumping it up into Supra price ranges and the entry level aspect will be lost. Quote:
Yep! I love to get new cars and should have replaced the FRS this year but intend to hang onto it a couple more years at least. When it is time to change I will look at what is out there and decide then. I am very interested in seeing what they do with the WRX/STi on the new platform. I am also waiting for Genesis to get off their ass and release the coupe since it may be interesting as well. If mine was totaled today and I had to replace it then it would be either a BRZ in one of the special editions or a TRD 86. It would all depend on what I could find that was still new. If I could not find anything special then a blue BRZ Limited would be my last choice. |

For me to purchase a second 86 there would have to be a significant change between models. The MK1 and MK2 MR2 comes to mind. I would have purchased a MK2 as a replacement for my MK1 but at the time I needed a bigger car. It would have to be that type of change for me to be interested though (basically not the same but tweaked car). |
Yes. Even if I buy another car, I'm keeping this one cause there's nothing else like it at the moment and no indication that there ever will be.
|
If I totaled my car today, I'd definitely try to buy another FR-S or BR-Z for sure. But, in a few years when I'm ready to upgrade, who knows? I don't really know what my needs/wants (or budget lol) will be at that time so I can't really say if I'll want another 86.

Had my last car for 18 years.
Probably, unless the twins turn out to be weedier than any vehicle ever produced before. Had a motorcycle for 25 years. Current one is going on 15 years now. Guess I'm pants at flipping stuff. |
