Best summer tire for a 234/40 R18 wheel
 

Hi group. I'm getting set of wheels that will need to go on a 18x9.5 with +44 offset. The tire size on it now is a 235/40 R18 tire. These will strictly be a summer tire, but not a track only tire. So what brands are out there that you guys like and have had great luck with. Thanks.

A lot of people like Michelin, a lot of people like Hankook, a lot of people like Bridgestone. There are a ton of tires, and they are individuals like people - they have their quirks, advantages, and disadvantages. This will require a lot of research. Tire trammel may mean nothing to someone who drives on perfect roads, but for someone who drives on re-surfaced C class main roads will be affected by this phenomenon. Rain performance may mean nothing to an Arizonian, but someone in Chicago may rely on all around performance.

If you don't want to do research on common viable tires, tell us a lot more about your needs, your driving environment and style. Maybe we can help, but in the end, it comes down to what you like. Different sidewall styles will have different turn in response, different reaction to potholes, different levels of noise...

And as a follow up question...what oil should OP be using..? lol

The tire will be used from around April to October in the midwest area. It's my daily driver car. I'll be taking it on one road coarse this year which is on public roads. I don't really drift at all and have no urge to, I'd like it to take corners hard without breaking free either. Road conditions are mainly cement and asphalt. It does rain in the midwest, so it should be able to handle a good rainfall to. And like to keep the tire around 200 a tire.

Hankook V12 isn't a bad tire for the money. Pretty popular with Floridians at least. A lot of people complain about road noise, but other than that everyone seems happy. The Firestone Firehawks have been getting a lot of buzz lately from weekend warrior people. The track guys don't seem to like them so much however.

I recently picked up a set of Sumitomo HTR ZIII for my new wheels. I've had them once before, and they tick every box I have; budget, wet grip, dry grip obviously, and road noise. Cost me about $413 shipped to my door via a coupon from a tire site.

If your wheels are +44, I assume that you have coils.


I'm not a fan of the 235/40. I don't think it looks good. But whatever...


I would suggest a 245/35/18. They are stock diameter, fit nicely on an 18x9.5 wheel, and are available in many different brands / models.


I'm running Hankook Evo V12s, which I think have too soft of a sidewall. (I chose them on price and reviews to replace MPSS) I will be getting another set of Michelins next: MPS4S in 245/35/18.

Thanks for the reply. Wheel and tire sizes are a pretty foreign area to
me. That’s why I put the post in here. I’m buying the set from someone on the forum here and that is the tire size that is currently on the wheel. So I’m not sure if they are stretched to fit or what ad what the proper size is like you said to make it look more stock. I’ll take a look at the 245/35 size tire too. Thanks again.

I was to echo that Hankook makes one of the most daily driver / rain friendly tires I've personally driven on. I'm by no means a tire expert, but as far as road comunication, overall grip, rain and cold weather confidence, Hankook V12 Evo is awesome
