Boost and Lightweight Flywheels?
 

I can't recall where I had come across this, but someone was having issues with tuning their turbo setup due to...a lightweight (LW) flywheel?

I do understand that even on an N/A setup there's a bit of a learning curve with the LW Flywheel since not only do you rev up quicker but the needle falls much faster.

But the fact that you rev up much quicker, does this interfere with once boost comes on?

And if there isn't an issue with tuning, does driveability decline a lot because the car may simply become too manic with boost plus a quick-revving LW flywheel?

My car is turbo and just installed a light weight flywheel with the new clutch. Can’t really say it is that much difference. Breaking in the clutch is the difficult part.

Is the LW flywheel about 10-11 lbs? Just in terms of driveability, you haven't noticed an overall responsiveness in terms of revving up quicker and revs falling down faster as well?

If you don't mind me asking, which brand of flywheel/clutch combo did you go with? How much boost are you running?

AVO turbo 8 psi E85. ACT street clutch. Flywheel is 10.?? Lbs.

It does appear to rev quicker. Just got done breaking in clutch have not pushed it yet.

My experience is not exactly with a FR-S/BRZ/86, but I had a lightweight flywheel on both my old VR6 turbo and TDI. I actually preferred the drivability. Having the revs rise/fall faster helped the engine feel much more lively and got me going from a stop half a second quicker since I didn't have to wait for the engine to get its ass moving. It was also nice while pulling into a parking spot or other situation where I'd give it a little bit of gas/quick poke with the clutch to keep the car moving. Instead of the engine hanging and making a ton of racket, it would quickly drop back to idle so I didn't look like some jerk trying to show off.

The only downside I noticed was the chatter from the clutch was more pronounced (especially on my TDI). I didn't mind it, but it might bother non car enthusiasts who don't love hearing the noises their cars make. It definitely isn't as bad on gasoline powered cars as it is on diesels.

revs quicker but you have flywheel chatter with a/c on during idle. im boosted with a act xtss clutch and lw flywheel, same setup as ft86speedfactory on their track car

Lw flywheel with boost, JDL turbo kit, it’s awesome, would do it again. Yes there is chatter, if your worried about noise then don’t do it.

Explain to me this “Chatter”?

Ahhh noise? Duh...

That's not the flywheel or clutch. It's the transmission.
