Don't hate me because I stumbled into one

Well, not stumbled like a drunken stumble, but I had not been planning to buy one of these until I got a call from a salesman.
I don't remember how I may have landed on the local salesman's call list, but he called me a week ago to say they had an unclaimed barebones bright red manual transmission unit that just came in.

It has the distributor-installed paint and fabric "protection" package, but at least that provides extra warranty against some fabric stains on the seats.

One good test drive to feel out the transmission plus several hours beating up the dealership on financing and tradein, and I'm driving it home at sticker with no "market adjustment" pricing games.

Best reaction so far was an aggressive thumbs up with a really big smile from some in-progress-looking 240SX.

As my daily driver, I'll put too many miles to dream of collector value, but I firmly believe this is too significant of a car for me to pass up the opportunity, especially with no price markup.

I expect the car to be nothing but fun.
My salesman mentioned the trick about fitting the spare set of tires inside more than once. My bigger space challenge the first weekend was fitting my modest beer cooler for the BBQ Cookoff weekend I attended.
As a naturalized Texan, I'll gladly trade New Car Smell for hickory/oak/pecan barbecue smoke. ;-)

Congrats. I do recommend getting one of those reflector things to place in your windshield when you're in the sun. The interior gets really hot.

don't all 240sx appear to be "in progress?"

What was the sticker price? Or can you post a picture to show all their add-ons? Nitrogen in tires?

I hate you and I am going to steal your car and fill it with spiders.

Synack 07-31-2012 03:25 PM

What did you say to make them adjust the market adjustment they were trying to pull? I had to buy mine above sticker unfortunately.

Tanuki 07-31-2012 03:43 PM

They advertise pure pricing. I paid the exact sticker price.

oh and as for 240's being a work in progress:

Penske-owned Round Rock Auto Group tends to be more than half decent as far as dealers go.

A couple of silly documentation fee kind of things, but no effort to add market adjustment.

Oh ok. I was able to eliminate all document related crap, including gap insurance, etc. I also got them to give me a college graduate discount. So where they marked my car up $3000 I brought them back down about $1600 through all of that. Still got butt raped though.

Tanuki 07-31-2012 04:56 PM

That is insane. I will start negotiating people's deals for them if they will fly me out, feed me, and pay me $100 for the day.

I told the Sales Manager to his face that they could not do it and he still wouldn't budge. I had no choice because it was the exact car I wanted and there were >14 people in line already for it and 3 people on the phone with their bank trying to get financing done. I kind of just swooped in and snagged it but still don't appreciate the markup.

i'm excited about the car, but i can wait. i'm not paying over msrp. if the dealership won't sell it for msrp then i'll try another. if i can't find one at msrp i'll wait. eventually there will be more supply than demand.
