Can i go wider without changing LCA
 

Hi, im currently running rh zw6 18x8.5 et 53 and 20mm adapter front, 25mm adapter rear. Decided that during winter i want reassemble my rims with more lip on and was thinking could i fit 18x10 et 14 rear, 18x9 et 22.

Do you not get snow there? Tires those wide will turn the car into a toboggan in even small amounts of snow.

If anything, i didn't like traction on snow/ice even of 215 stock width tires. But then again, those that mostly care about drop/fitment/stance/stretch and alike are usually willing to sacrifice anything to that, budget, traction, handling, compliance, safety, so be it.

yes we have about 40cm of snow in here atm, picture in the starting post is from last summer. Currently i have my car in storage for the winter. drove it last winter with stock rims and winter tyres that have metal studs. these wheels are for summer use only. :)

Do you have coilovers? How crazy of camber do you want to run? Without coils, you will need tophats and or two sets of camber bolts in the front. You will also need LCA for the rear, if you are going to even attempt something like this.


I have 18x9 +30 front and 18x9 +27 rear. -2.5 and -3.0 camber. I am running coils, camber bolts, LCA, and a few other parts.


Your proposed setup is not ideal at all. You will need tons of camber and stretched tires.


A 18x9 +22 will "fit" up front with a narrow tire and -3 camber. (maybe -3.5)


A 18x10 +14 will not fit. If you got it on the car, you would need LCAs, and possibly RacerX rear upper control arms. (to dial in a ton of negative camber) You will need -5 camber at least. ( I am guessing)


Additionally, You would need an 18x10 +35 to match the poke of your front. +14 is too aggressive IMO to actually work.




An 18x10 +14 will stick out 26mm more than my rear wheel. To match my wheels poke, you would need a 18x10 +40 wheel. (that's a 245/35/18 - if curious)

You can see in this pic that there is still a bit more room. Especially if you were to add more negative camber, a 18x9 +22 will "fit".

Even studded tires overly wide will compromise snow/ice traction due wide contact patch and less pressure per area and less "pressed in studs into ice". On snow wide tires will "float over snow" without digging in to more harder packed pavement with more grip, similar to aquaplaning. There is reason while even very powerful with forced induction WRC rally cars run almost-space-saver-looking skinny 15x6 to 15x7 wheels with width of some 155-205 (with tires often have reduced/smaller actual thread width of eg. 147mm or 159mm, smaller then supposed tire "mount-width"). So either you don't take out on snow/ice on subpar chosen for looks only too wide wheels & tires and keep car garaged for winter, instead of asking for "winter wheels/tires", or better choose something reasonable, that will provide some traction for safe & reliable enough driving despite whatever winter in Finland may throw at you. Given that often for bigger wheel sizes tire manufacturers just not making narrower sizes, imho worth -for winter- to either choose the narrowest tire released for used wheel size, or maybe get dedicated winter wheel set of smaller size. If nothing else, even steelies may do, if budget is tight. As side bonus for smaller diameter wheels tires too will cost noticeably less, and also will provide extra ride comfort/compliance over bad roads and extra wheel protection. For frequent snow/ice i'd get studded tires (imho should be legal in Finland). Eg. new Michelin North X-Ice 4 or Nokian Hakkapeliitas 8 or 9. Of narrowest width you can get for wheel size (but your current mentioned 18x8.5 sounds very bad choice for that, as not only R18 tires will cost much more (if that can be of indicator, for me set of Hakkas8 for R16 wheels was 150eur cheaper then almost same set for R17 wheels), but also any good for winter roads tire widths will be too much stretched for that wide of a wheels). My choice for winter would be getting R16 wheels + 195 or 205 wide xin4 studded tires so i can drive safely when i want or have fun like this.

Im not looking for winter setup or running these wheels during winter, if i drive my BRZ during winter i will be using the brz's stock rims + continental winter studs. I have BC BR coilovers on the car, and the tyre is going to be 225/40?. Im just changing wider lips to those rims in the first picture.

Check this out! This guy is running 18x11 +25 wheels. Compared to a 18x10 +14, his only will stick out 1.7mm more. He has to run -9.5 rear camber to tuck a 235 on an 11. So, If you want that 18x10 +14 to fit, and you buy some LCA, it's possible. (you probably will need a few other suspension parts too)

An 18x10 with a 225?? A 10 inch wide wheel should support a 275......

Yes i will post, ill just have to wait 2-3 months for the snow to melt and the weather to get warmer, not motivated currently to work on the car because its its outside and theres -20 Celsius.

OK that makes more sense! The wording of your first post made it seem like you wanted the wider tires for the winter not that you wanted to just plan it over the winter.
