brz to m240i

this is more of an appreciation than a ‘vs’ but here goes..

up until about a year ago i owned a ‘15 brz, which was a really awesome car that really got me enjoying driving again. i learned to heel/toe, took it around a track a few times, how to carefully drive and park a low ground clearance car, what a joy an lsd equipped/rwd car could really be.

last week i had the opportunity to purchase a ‘17 bmw 240i, manual, that had been equipped with an lsd from the port install of the previous (first) owner. and let me say, its all that was good about my brz multiplied by a bit. the go pedal means go, the seating position is not as racecar as the brz but certainly nice, the rear end helps push you through a turn - all the while as i know at a baseline what to expect and understand and respect the extra go/stop/turn power of this new car added to the very nice (to me) interior and infotainment.

it was a great experience to have started down the sports car path with that brz and to really feel what owning something like this is about, and though everyone will have their own different path whether thats modding their twin, swapping into an wrx, s2k, z car, stang or camaro, bmw or whatever - im glad i did.

Same motor in a Supra.

With three choices of engine, AWD, and a convertible, the 2-series sold almost 1300 more than the twins did in 2018.

Nice car OP! They're fast and very capable.

That's not really relevant though, they're in completely different market segments. The 240i starts at 15k higher than the twins top out at, and it's a luxury performance car, not a sports car. It weighs over 700lbs more than the twins. I'm not sure they get cross shopped often.

Nice car but 2 different animals. Price, power, weight, market target. I enjoyed driving one that a friend owns however personally the 86 is still my choice and I can afford either

I cross shop all kinds of cars, largely because I keep multiple cars. When I shopped for the FR-S, I looked at BMW and Porsche among others. I actually had a 5-series I traded in. Years ago, I test drove trucks and ended up with a Spark EV. I got a truck eventually, though.

i will say that you could cross shop a 2-3 yr old m235/240 for roughly similar prices as new pp equipped limited brz’s. but as you mentioned, different animals.

Enjoy the new car. Whatever makes you happy in life is all that matters! Love that color BTW. Glad you got a 6sp too.

The M2 variant of that chassis is very attractive. I'm considering it over a Cayman in the next few years. The carbon build up is still there in the new engine but looks to be way less of a problem.

Congrats on the upgrade, what other mods are you planning?

Tcoat 01-21-2019 03:09 PM

Yep, the Twins were always stated to be an entry level sports car and they serve that purpose very well. There are a few directions that you can go up from them so it is great when somebody finds the right next step for them.

honestly its already got the lsd, a catback, carbon fiber bits, nicer wheels than stock - im likely to keep it exactly as is at least until the warranty is up in 2 yrs. maybe a tune after or something?

as cheap as subarus are to fix, these seem like theyre not so i wanna stay on the good side of the factory warranty in all counts while its around.

congrats, the m240i with the b58 was as fast if not faster than the none competition m2 in straight line acceleration.

I also moved from FR-S to a E90 M3, and now to a Lex GS-F
