17 successful out of how many attempted?

Since this is your first post, I guess I have to let you know that some people here came to the conclusion that if nothing's gone wrong on your car by now, best to leave it alone. A lot of cars failed after the recall work was done. It's a very precise procedure and they're simply not competent enough to perform it.

Also, you may wish to keep in mind, that even if you can find a dealership to do the recall work, with your supercharger installed, and you put the supercharger back on, they may very well NOT warrant anything that goes wrong with the engine after that - :iono:

Yep, I'm in the "if it ain't broke, don't let em break it" camp.

California is forcing recall victims into the "if it doesn't break, you can't register it" camp. I would feel a lot more comfortable if a Subaru dealership with experience working on boxer engines did the work, but I have an FRS so it it has to be done by Toyota.

Well, in that case, I would suggest taking the supercharger off the car, having the recall work done, drive it for a couple of thousand miles, then, if it's running OK, put the supercharger back on.

I'm glad that I don't live in California anymore; up here in Washington, the state is even discontinuing smog checks.

There have been failures from both sides of the fence. The Subaru techs don't have much more experience with this particular boxer engine than to the Toyota techs I don't believe. Isn't the engine unique to the 86?

Has anyone in CA had to show proof of the recall being completed to the CA DMV in order to renew their tags?

Looks like Subaru has been using boxer engines for a while - "Since the Subaru 1000 of 1966[17] the water-cooled front-mounted flat-four and flat-six engines have been used by Subaru in all of its mid-sized cars, including the Impreza, Legacy, Outback, and SVX. The Forester and Tribeca SUVs, BRAT and Baja pickup trucks, and BRZ sports car also use boxer engines"

That would be ideal, but is the most expensive option for me. The cheapest local shop I found quoted me $800 to uninstall the supercharger and another $600 to install it. Plus I don't have the stock parts anymore.

No, I realize that, I meant this SPECIFIC boxer which is the one that is having the sealant problem. None of the other boxers involved in the recall are the same engine, and are not having this result. It is only the BRZ and the FRS.

So at minimum it would appear that Subaru may be willing to pay for the workaround if it's reasonable.

Here is what I found for Toyota:
My vehicle has been modified with aftermarket (non-factory) components and my dealer says I should remove the modifications before the Safety Recall can be performed; is there anything I can do about this?

A7:Some vehicles may be equipped with non-Toyota-approved parts and/or accessories that make it difficult or impossible for a dealer to install the remedy parts for this Safety Recall. Toyota does not recommend modifying vehicles and cannot evaluate how any aftermarket, non-Toyota-approved parts could affect a vehicle’s operation. That is why it is best to restore your vehicle to its original condition prior to the remedy being performed. Notwithstanding Toyota’s recommendation, some dealers may be willing to perform the Safety Recall remedy with the vehicle in its current modified condition. If your dealer is willing to do so, you may be charged for labor or parts costs not otherwise covered by Toyota's Safety Recall remedy. Toyota provides the specific remedy parts kit, necessary engine fluids and sealant, and covers 12.2 13.8hours (depending upon vehicle configuration) of dealer labor expenses. You must pay any additional charges for parts or labor by the dealer which are the result of the vehicle’s non-Toyota-approved modifications. Toyota is not responsible for later performance problems your vehicle may have that are the result of the non-Toyota-approved vehicle modifications.

No real surprise there. I wouldn't expect them to do it for free if there was any substantial additional labor involved.

Does anyone know of a dealership in northern California that is willing to do the recall on the car with a supercharger? I've tried calling just about every dealership and all of them require the car to be in stock form.

Is it a Toyota or Brz ? What type of supercharger ?
