Toyota FTS report engine issues with FR-S running 91 octane
 

Hey everyone this is my first thread I have started and hope I do it right ha. I work at a Toyota/Scion Dealership in Kansas and just got word from my service manager that there are reports from Toyota FTS (Field Technical Specialists) that they have documented legitimate relations between rough engine idle and running conditions with using 91 octane fuel. The owners manual does say to use 93 octane but i never figured it would be a big enough difference to cause these issues. My FR-S is due to show up in the next couple weeks so it sucks to hear this stuff ha.

When my FR-S (finally) gets here I will be using 91 octane no ethanol gas that I found using the link in this thread:

Does anybody know if 91 no ethanol is equal or in some way superior to 93 E10?

The owner's manual actually says 91 octane is fine, as well, even if 93 is preferred.

There are some locations where it is impossible to buy anything higher than 91, like... California.

Use a little of this stuff with every fill up and you'll be good to go.

Hah I used to use the Torco stuff a long time back, it works but may eventually cause issues if you use enough of it...

The car is meant to run on 91 octane, so I imagine there will be some kind of reflash happening to fix the issue.

Isn't that stuff like straight ethanol, which our fuel pumps don't seem to like?

I ran this stuff on my car for 6-7 years without a single issue.

Thanks for the advice but I personally feel it's a bit rediculous to have to purchase fuel additives for a bone stock vehicle just because the nearest gas station with 93 is almost 50 miles away from where I currently live. I'm just very surprised Toyota didn't see that this requirement of 93 octane to be at least a slight issue for the U.S. market considering some parts of the country don't even carry 93. I am just curious if anyone has any experience with fuels that know if 93 E10 is really better than 91 without ethanol.

That site isn't 100% , it only has previously reported gas pumps .. It shows me one shell that has ethanol free and it won't show the shell in my neighborhood ..

I am running Shell 91 V Power with no ethanol. Runs nice .. even during break-in!

You can pick up higher octane at a few spots in Cali. I paid $7/gal for 100 octane. 3 to 4 gallons of that during a fill-up will give you a little over 93.

I was trying it just to try it - didn't notice any real difference during the last 100 miles or so of driving in mixed conditions.

Mine started idling a bit rougher after 1500 miles. Hesitates and bounces between 400 and 800 rpm.

Mine bounces ALOT between 400-800. when the AC is on it will dip so low when i clutch in that i can hear the engine chatter for a split second until it pops back up.

You'll probably have to reset the ECU and see if it makes a diff.
