valve spring recall-engine oil leak
does the valve spring issue cause engine oil leak? my 2013 frs had engine light on and i can smell oil burns. there are also grease accumulated on the engine. i want to know if dealer will fix it during the recall.

No expert here, but valve springs are internal, so I wouldn't see them as a cause. (unless it of course caused a major engine failure!)
That said, the various gaskets & seals that are replaced when the recall work is done may fix some of your leaks...depending where they are coming from (and whether those parts are dis/reassembled during the work). |

The dealer may fix the leak during the recall if the leaky part has to be taken off and resealed, like a camshaft cover or camshaft cap/housing. Also keep in mind that oil burning on the exhaust, as seems to be the problem in your case, affects the oxygen sensor's reference to ambient air. Any exhaust oxygen sensor needs a reference to air outside of the exhaust, if you've got lot of oil smoke filling the engine bay, you're decreasing the amount of oxygen in the reference signal versus what is in the air being burnt in the engine (the intake being located in the bumper). Your engine management may be trying to enrich the mixture to get rid of the "excess" air it's seeing in the exhaust, when in fact it's dealing with too little air in the reference signal, triggering the system lean code. Also, it's been said to "not drive it to risk a spun bearing" - that is not a concern. Pull the dipstick, if there's oil between the marks, spinning a bearing from an oil leak isn't a real worry. The real problem is enduring the situation for too long and doing long term damage to the cat converter. A lot of old subarus piss oil from everywhere for years, a lot of those old subarus have P0420s, but those old beaters just keep beating on as long as there's oil in 'em. |

Not trying to derail the subject, but it's also possible that your CEL and oil leak are unrelated. That lean code you have is most commonly associated with vacuum leaks, exhaust leaks, and sometimes an incorrectly scaled maf on an aftermarket intake. I suggest you first check all of your intake and exhaust connections then have a look at the fuel trims. The code is typically triggered when your fuel trims peg positive. IIRC i think once it gets to +30 it'll throw the code.
Before diving deeper into this, the car is stock, right? |
