Grease to prevent window sticking in winter ?

I tried Silicon Spray, but that went away after a few days.
Has anyone just smeared Lithium grease onto the weatherstripping?

This won't dry up, and I am not opening my windows for 2-3 months.
So, I don't care if there is an inch of grease outside the top of the door glass.
I can wipe off the grease at the end of the winter.

I use dielectric grease which is pure silicone, is clear and won't hurt the seals. Available at any auto parts store. Works great and is hydrophobic.

Doesn't that turn your windows into a smeared mess, especially if you put the window all the way down and the silicone grease gets into the window wipes at the base?

Good question. My windows are never down in winter (car stored outside). However, I don't wipe it off in the spring and it only slightly smears the top 1/2 inch of the window. That said, I only use a small amount spread evenly over the window seal. Just enough to make the seals shiny is all that's needed. Dielectric grease is great.

Pam cooking spray.

Spray it on a rag, wipe the seals, go live your life.

I use Honda Shin-Etsu grease, made just for this application and works great!

Dear God, no.

All vegetable oils oxidize and varnish. Have you never felt sticky old oil stains on a stove? ...or the bottom of a bottle of corn oil?

Honda Shin Etsu grease

I have, and have never had that issue on window or door seals.

That's interesting. After I went off looking at the chemical composition of the Shin-Etsu stuff, I also looked up the contents of Sil-Glyde, a tube of "silicone" lubricant that I bought some time ago.

Main ingredient is castor oil. 0.o

Interesting. I've been wrestling w/ the frozen window/daily re-initialization hassle for four winters now, and getting kind of sick of it. I have a tube of Jack's silicone o-ring lube handy, and also a food-grade lube for the seals on my beer kegging/tapping setups.. both safe for rubber, of course. Any downside to trying either of those, rather than buying the Honda stuff?

This issue is with many cars. My dads CLK had the same issue. He complained so much the dealership replaced the door seals twice. The issue came back each time...

Armorall makes door seal wipes. Pretty sure thats what my buddy used on my car after I was complaining about my windows to him.

I bet that any of the above are fine. I just can't wrap my head around the PamŽ... or castor oil, for that matter.

FirstWinter 01-05-2019 09:12 PM

There's other stuff as well like 303 and Gummi Pflege

KoreanJesus 01-07-2019 01:54 AM

I use it for squeaky door hinges too. Smells better than wd-40.

Reminds me of the time, back in the day, when I was a kid, I thought I'd do my grandma a favor and clean up her cast iron skillets.

So I lugged four of them out into my sandbox and commenced to scrubbing. After several hours, they were bright and shiny.

She was not pleased, but thanked me for my hard work - :iono:

Applied a coat of lithium grease.
I'll report back in a week.

As long as something Silicone based instead of petroleum based is used it should be all good

My car doesn't have this issue, and it's been through a few winters, the newer switch designs post 2014 and better weather stripping definitely assuaged this issue.

Oh yeah. January 2014 was hell with the original parts. My windows would always freeze in the "dropped to open the door" position and get stuck there. It's a wonder I didn't fill the whole interior with snow during a storm.

I did right after buying my '13 a few years back. Didn't make much difference.. windows still freeze. Of course, we get some pretty severe weather... hard to believe anything would work ALL of the time here.
