Winter Tires Only Replacing Rears?!?

Hello,

Just wondering if anyone has experience or can comment on whether just replacing a pair of winter tires would be okay? My bridgestone winters are getting old and its so easy fish tailing with them on now. I was thinking of just buying two new ones and replacing the rears since I don't plan to drive it that often this winter. Has anyone done this before??

Thanks

Assuming you already have decent winter tires in the front, yes you can.
If you have summer tires on the front, don't.

As per the manual says, always put new tires on the rears.

imho 1) tires should be replaced due age (imho 3 seasons is reasonable maximum) 2) depending on extent of wear (both legally required thread depth and by common sense, as some tires may seriously underperform even while still having allowed minimum thread depth), 3) better to have wear even for handling/grip/car behaviour to be predictable, for electronic nannies / brakes and so on to work well with expected grip. Not required, but preferred.

For (3.) luckily our cars have square tire/wheel setup, that allows rotating tires to even out wear. Why not swap fronts with rears and change them whole set, when time comes? (of course unless one willingly gave up benefit of square setup and went for staggered).

Just FYI, if you are properly rotating your tires (even as little as swapping fronts to rears every season as I do) you shouldn't prematurely wear one set out that far in advance of the other set :)

Having said that, if there is nothing wrong with the other pair, and they still have plenty of tread, there is nothing wrong with replacing just one pair, so long as they are a similar tire with similar characteristics.

No. Its not ok to mix two winter tires with any other season tire.

If you cant afford four tires, park the car and ride the bus, or throw them on a credit card and don't risk other drivers safety.

If you really cant afford new, go buy used tires from bestusedtires.com

It helps to read the OP's ENTIRE post before commenting, rather than just the first sentence. I'm pretty sure he has winter tires at all four corners, and just wants to replace one set that are more worn.

^ Thank you

Please read my original post. No where does it state that I have summers or all seasons on the front. I already have winters on all fourand I don't plan to drive that often this winter PLUS I plan on selling the car soon(depending if the supra is reasonably priced).

Thank you to everyone else who contributed

The simple answer is put the best two on the front and put the new ones on the back.

PLEASE don't adjust coilovers for winter driving ( raising your ride 2.5") without getting an alignment. This is asked over and over. Mudflaps are available if you don't look shooting snow all over your doors. Traction control does not help in the conditions you described - Norwegian mountain slopes with small children shoveling. You're better off taking the bus as was said before.

Did this help?

Question. What if no buses exist in my area? Is two winter dogs enough for sledding or should I also attach my summer dogs? Which is safer for the children

I'd recommend leopards, dogs have fleas. I haven't heard of cases where leopards attack children either, dogs have a pretty poor rep for that, so I think this is a good plan.

It has been my experience that you need at least 8 dogs. You can get a little more out of them if you use an amphetamine injection for boost.

All this dog sledding talk has got me jealous of you Northern folk....stinking Florida. I can't wait to move away from this stupid equator so I can have dogs pulling me around in the snow!

everything has it's high points and low points. i'm in the midwest..

a preschool teacher i know once polled her class of 3-4 year old's, and they unanimously agreed they hated snow. most of them barely knew what snow was at that point. but their parents were always complaining about it, so they knew to hate it.

my parents never taught me to hate snow, so i usually still go find reasons to take the cars out and play in it!
