Oil Cooler Install (sandwich style)
 
I tried out one of these simple sandwich style oil cooler kits from NED auto. It is basically an OEM Subaru Forester or whatever oil "cooler". Not recommended for any kind of track usage but probably a step up over no cooler (for street and spirited driving).

This is perfectly timed and should be really helpful for me. Just got my kit, hoping to install it this weekend.

I know this isn't intended for track use, but I am also worried about introducing more failure points on the oil side of the system. Right now I am doing a track day every other month, and being religious with warm-ups, cool downs, checking oil levels, and limiting session length. I saw this as a cheaper and slightly safer modification while under warranty. If I get the 10-15F peak improvement that some people have seen, I will be pretty happy.

not specific to this cooler, but wouldnt any oil cooler make it take even longer to warm up in the winter? or do they not work until the thermostat opens?

Yes, an air-cooled style oil cooler would take longer to warm up your oil in cold temperatures. This sandwich style, since it is cooled/warmed by engine coolant, actually heats up the oil quicker. But, then it is not as efficient at keeping the oil cooled during intense driving because the coolant is very warm.

Now take this and slap an A2O kit on it! It was an idea I had. But wasn't certain how it would work.

So would this be a good mod to run for people that daily in the cold? That dumb light is on for 1/2 my drive to work and it never funny reaches temp on cold mornings

Just watched this before work this morning, nice install! Are you worried about the throttle body no longer being heated? I can confirm that the car takes forever to warm up with my Mishimoto oil cooler. It does get up to temp eventually, just takes an extra 5 minutes. Very excited to see a company is still putting these out there for people who don't want to piece the kits together themselves. I'm going to try and get a couple fellow BRZ owners to jump on this.

That’s why I did it this style, as I was only a ten minute drive from work. It did help with warming the oil in the winter and kept the temp down close to my coolent fluid the time I did a few laps on a track day with a small groups of “86”ers. But the majority of the time it’s just a daily driver.

Justinco do you have the data for the temp recordings? You say its not recommended for track usage but if the average temp delta is still lower then without one it might be worth it. Plus you should try and measure temps after a cool down lap as they might return to a usable temp faster with this oil cooler vs without one.

So I had ordered and installed the exact same kit as the OP. My hoses looked a little different (not orange on the inside), but otherwise the install was very similar. It was tough to get stuff on and off the throttle body, and you definitely want to tighten down the new hoses to the throttle body. I had a small leak at first, and tightening up the bottom hose fixed that.


As for real world performance, I had trouble finding a good comparison on before and after temps with track usage, so I did my best to compare similar conditions. The attached are from Streets of Willow CCW, in an otherwise fairly stock BRZ. (Lap times 1:30-1:35) The before is from a morning session in November, and the after was this weekend in December. I selected sessions with similar ambient temps, but the overall session length is different.


Overall, this meets my expectations. There is a definite improvement in peak temperature, about 10-15F, with the same speeds and RPM (maybe even driving slightly more aggressive after.) This isn't conclusive on warm-up and cool-down times, but I am happy to take a little bit of the edge off.

Anyone know the throttle body coolant hose pin size?
I got this kit but I’m in the process of installing my sprintex 210 SC, so I need longer hoses.
From my understanding the TB side is 1/4”? So figured i could get adaptors from the 3/8” on the oil cooler side to 1/4” for the TB side for a better fitment. Any one confirm this? Or anyone use this with the sprintex sc kit?
