Driving Heaven

Hi

I was not sure where to put this Thread so I've gone for off topic, hope its right, otherwise I'd be happy if a moderator could move it :-)

Any Petrolhead has a favorit place in its area where he likes to spend time with his car and everything just feels right. Thats why I start this Thread, I'd like to see your personal driving heaven. Doesnt matter where in the world it is, as long as it is a special place for you and maybe you ad some pictures to it so we can see why.

I'll make the start with my personal Driving heaven. It's called the 3 mountain pass tour, and it got its name from, well guess what, the three mountain passes (Susten, Grimsel, Furka) you run during this 150km trip.

It is located in the middle of Switzerland, and all the three passes are connected directly to each other, so there is no boring "transit" driving required. Its about 2-4h (depending on your speed and breaks you take during the trip) pure driving fun.

This is the Furka pass, where the fun starts. The Picture was taken on top of the Furka pass and what you can see in the background is the secound pass, the Grimsel Pass

This now shows Grimsel Pass on the way to Susten pass, there is a little lake there because of a Dam

Last picture shows Susten pass, the last of the three, normaly its getting dark when I hit it :-)

So thats my driving heaven.

Hope you enjoy the pictures and looking forward to see your driving heavens

Man I miss Switzerland, especially the mountains where I stayed at. It was so refreshing and beautiful to experience.

So thanks for posting those pics, they really rekindled my memory of that trip when I visited there.

I spent 6hrs in the alps looking for the stelvio pass(didn't make it:bonk:), nothing I've seen/driven on in North/South American can compare, I defently need to go back:happyanim:.

Hehe, probebly you've been in the wrong corner then :-) Stelvio pass is in the farest eastern corner of switzerland (if you can call something "far" in a country you can drive accross in only 5h:-)
However Stelvio itself, if I remember correctly, is already located on italian ground.
Problem with Stelvio compared to the 3passes here is that the roads are much worse to drive if you have a lowered car, and also the road is smaller, so you cant drive as fast as on some places you cannot "cross" another car, so you may have to stop instantly anytime. Hover, the scenery is fantastic aswell.

Generally thanks everyone for the nice comments, and I'll post some more pictures once my GT-86 has arrived and I could take it up there for a spin (I hope I still can do it this year, as from October on normaly the passes are closed due to snow)

Those Swiss really like their chocolate milk. They made whole lakes of it!

lol. Awesome roads though. If I ever hit the lottery I want to do a driving tour of Europe and rent a nice car (Aston Martin) to do it in. I'd hit up these roads, a road near my friend's home in Poland, the Top Gear "best" roads, Isle of Man, Nurburgring, etc..

soooo nice places. How's the speed limit over there?

atledreier 01-04-2013 10:01 AM

Roads like these are usually 70 or 80kph. Weird part is, we have motorways fit for 120kph that has 80 limit, and we have roads with 80 where you really CAN'T do 80 because of the state of the road, so it's a proper numpty country. The Atlantic Ocean Road is not THAT exciting driving wise, but the scenery is pretty spectacular. There are better driving roads. Pretty much most of our roads except the major thoroughfares are pretty exciting, with some truly awesome bits scattered around.

A bit further from me there's Trollstigen which is pretty awesome if you somehow miss the german RVs...

I'm looking for roads similar to these but in the states. They will be no were nearly as extreme, but ill take what i can get without leaving the country.

So its like over here then. And I'm happy with that, they can slow down the suburban area roads all they want, as long as they leave me the mountain roads. Its a kind of "freedom" to drive them as fast as you like, and still be within legal restricions because you cant drive them faster then the speed limit anyway.

Just checked the maps, its over 1700km one way up to Norway from here... why do you guys have to be so far away from the rest of europe? :-P

Why does the rest of Europe have to be so far away from us?!?

SC David 01-10-2013 03:56 AM

Ughhh, very jealous of the mountain passes in the Alps.

Hwy 1 north of the Golden Gate Bridge is fantastic as a driving road and for scenery, but most of the year it is clogged with RVs and slow tourist traffic.
