I got my letter, my VIN is pretty much right in the middle of the range that was posted. I wonder what the trade in value of a low mileage (30k km) never winter driven '13 is? Maybe time to trade up.

You would probably do much better selling it privately.


Are you thinking of the trade up due to the recall? Don't think it's a big deal myself. It's like a $3,000 repair 100% covered by Subaru.

I am hoping a Toyota or Subaru tech could post (or PM me) a copy of the entire service schedule for this safety recall.

I'm curious if they will try to reflash my (Ecutek programmed) ECU ?

Got a letter this week, my BRZ is affected although they stated in the letter that they are waiting for parts to come in and would send another notice when they're ready for me to bring my car in.

there's no flashing involved, but i doubt they'll work on a boosted car.

Given it's a safety recall due to a manufacturing defect that is ordered by Transport Canada, I'm pretty sure they can't legally deny completing work.

If I or someone else was killed because of a known safety defect in my car, the lawyers would have a field day with it, both civilly and criminally.


In fact - given the extrapolation of the simple argument that I never would have modified the car if I knew they had built me an engine with a manufacturing defect, I'm pretty sure they can't legally charge me for any additional time that's required either.

I will be consulting with my lawyer before I even take my car in.

Retail value minus $3k-$4k. For a 2013, I'd guess somewhere around the low teens + tax for a Sport-Tech; depends what shape the body/paint is in, CarFax report, etc. Maybe a bit more given your low mileage.

Lots of pretty crazy deals on 2018s at the moment though.

No doubt selling privately would be better, but I still wonder what a dealer would offer, I'm thinking 7-8 grand. Even though cost is covered I would trade because of the recall.

Another reason is because mine's an FR-S it's supposed to be done at Toyota instead of a Subby shop where they would have so much more experience with their boxer engines. I'm going to call the local Subby dealer see if I can get it done there.

Personally, I think you may be over thinking the recall/repair thing. Replacing valve springs on a boxer isn't really any different than it would be in a 4 cam Toyota V-6 -- just a few less valves.

The only difference I see, is that the engine has to come out to do the repair whereas a V-6 with lots of room in the engine bay might be doable in-car.


As for the trade in price you mentioned - I think you're pretty close. I would say 8-10K tops. You may come across a deal where they give you more on paper for it, but any difference is being made up for in profit on the new car which you could otherwise negotiate off if you weren't trading in.

Valve Spring Recall Issue Resolved!!!

I wanted everyone to know that I took my FR-S in to my local Toyota dealership on November 26 for the valve spring recall situation.
Unfortunately, they didn’t have any info yet on the recall but they graciously gave me a rental car and covered the entire rental car cost.
Surprisingly, they called me today to tell me that my car was done and ready to be picked up.
It was about a $1300.00 dealer service charge (which will be billed to Toyota).

fyi - i'm getting this done at the end of the month at Tony Graham Toyota in Ottawa.

for BRZ guys in Ottawa, I was told that Ottos isnt even ready yet, so i might have lucked out with the FRS. They have 5 scheduled already including mine.

I'm waiting for pricing on add-ons but i'm looking at getting the spark plugs changed (no-brainer), di seals, and putting an STI motor mount in.
