Online insurance quote declined.

I was bored; I checked (again) the status of my BRZ order. While I was there I thought I would get a quote from Subaru's linked insurance crowd (Allianz Insurance Australia). One of the questions was "Has your vehicle been modified in any of the following ways: engine, body/paint, suspension or wheels?" to which I answered yes. I got a page with this message
"
We are unable to offer you insurance online :
  • due to the vehicle being modified.
We suggest you contact the Insurance Council of Australia (ICA) who may be able to assist you with finding appropriate insurance cover. The ICA telephone number is 1300 884 934.

Thank you for using our online quote facility.

For further information please refer to the Allianz Dispute process "

Given their suggestion of contacting the Insurance Council of Australia I wonder if modded vehicles are going to have a hard time finding insurance or whether the application form is only for those with bog standard cars. There was no suggestion of contacting Allianz to discuss things further.

I think I will call them tomorrow just to see what their issue is. I mean if you replace the wheels with after market wheels that are the same spec as original is this a modification? I call it a mod even tho' it is legal. Maybe they mean mods that fall out of spec/adrs. This shall be tomorrow's mission.

that's a little disconcerting...get insurance approval before doing mods?

Captain Snooze 07-29-2012 06:17 AM

To be covered you have to let the insurer know of any alterations that would affect claims. If the insurer claimed the car after an accident and found it modified without their knowledge they would not pay out.

Just Car or Shannons will give you a quote for a modded car

Its just their online quoting tool won't allow mods - once you have your car you can insure it as standard, then when you mod it give them a call.

And not all insurance companies have the same policies on mods. Allianz may have a policy against mods, which is fine, but just car, shannons, suncorp all allow mods.
