Trying to fix shifter slop
What’s up. I’ve been searching and haven’t really came to a solution. I’ve ordered some delrin round stock and am going to try and make bushings for the carrier and linkage. May try different derometers of polyurethane. Increased nvh is ok as long as it isn’t rattling obnoxiously. I suspect some play comes from where the linkage meets the transmission. If it’s inside the transmission, rebuild gear shift fork? Idk yet I work at a machine shop so I hope a can tighten the assembly up. Will post what I find.

Such extender might seem as cheap way to put shifter closer to steering wheel .. but heck, it scares me to watch your vid. I'm under impression, that increased length of lever + extra mass may make it drop out of gear by simply from rattle when driving over bad road.
May i suggest to rather go with IRP or CAE shifter? Yes, they'll cost more, but they will also reduce throws and will have waay better & precise shifting feel & less play then even stock short-lever shifter. |
Yeah this thing is ridiculous and I like it. I’ve only had the extension for about a week and I’ve missed a shift or two. But would like to see if I Could improve it before switching to a better shifter. Thanks for the suggestion

It really doesn't look like there is any more slop than normal. If you consider where the stock shifter normally sits, there isn't much movement at that point, but when you add the extender, it magnifies the movement.

I agree slop looks about normal. So the answer to your question is remove that extension and throw it in the trash! Put stock knob back on. Problem solved. I have always shortened my shifters, never wanted to extend them.

I'm thinking you were born too late - :D I figure that if you put that shifter on any twin, it would act the same way. I'm thinking that if you were to tighten up the clearances inside the shift linkage and transmission, to the point where that extension didn't wobble around, it would be difficult to shift - :iono: humfrz |

Just goes to show how much YOU know bout racen - :D humfrz |
Thanks for the replies!
Looking at buying a spare trans with shift assembly so I don’t have to drop mine. So it’ll probably be a couple weeks till I find anything out. The play is normal but aren’t we here to make our cars better than normal? I could spend the trans money on a premium shifter but I want to see what I can do. Maybe learn in the process and help the people who want a tighter shift lever. Thanks |
Probably going to be impractical but I’ve got time on my hands. Lol

The play is normal, this isn’t like an e36/e46 bmw where replacing the bushings make it solid as hell.

Everything you did exaggerates the motion and spring action. Large mass further away makes the spring less effective. Much longer throw, less feel for the gates. As fare as racing, short is faster ( ie. short shift kit). When approaching a point that requires a shift you already have your hand on the knob.
You have been watching racers with a dog box, no clutch just blip and shove it into the next gear. Long handle is easier to push the dogs into place. NOT for street use. Maybe the look is what you wanted and will half to put up with the resulting idiosyncrasys. |
