Diff oil service
Hi Guys,
My Australian delivered 86GTS requires a diff oil change at 45,000km. The manual gives us two options: "Toyota Genuine Differential Gear Oil LT" or "Other LSD gear oil that meets API GL-5 and SAE 75W-85". Do you think I should put the Toyota stuff in or if not, what is a good alternative? No complaints with how the diff is working with the factory fill, just looking for alternatives from those who may have some experience. Subsonic. |
Chose whatever gear oil you want. Or what ever your wallet says.
I for one used mobile 1 gear oil, just because it's available at any auto parts store and it's cheap compared to oem gear oil and saves me a 30 minute drive to the dealership. And if you don't like it, it's simple to drain and fill with whatever oil you chose. |
Use any equivalent. I used Castrol in mine. It's right as rain. Zero noise and the Torsen bites like new.
Avoid using the combo GL-4/GL-5 stuff. |

mmm, why do you say that ? I've been using Gear 300 for years, seems fine I think. |
Dealership oil and service are very expensive.
The only reason i keep going back , is to keep my 6 year warranty. |

I suggest that, unless one is concerned about minimizing inventory, there's no reason to choose in-between stuff over the good stuff. Use GL-4 in the transmission, GL-5 in the diff, and call it a day. |
Penrite Pro Gear GL-5 75W-85 in mine
So far no kittens, or gears have been killed. $25 Ltr at Stupercheap |
^ Sweet, Penrite ProGear looks a good oil that matches the Toyota LX spec - full synth too ;)
