What is the name of this colored rubber strip in the wheel well?
 

Hi!

You may remember me as the idiot who hand compounded through his own clear coat (on the rear quarter panel, no less)

$800 later, I have got a good match without blending into the trunk.

Unfortunately, I noticed that the body shop could have done a much better job masking and transitioning the new clear coat on the edge of the wheel well to the "lip" of the wheel well. Right now, there is a hard ridge and I am afraid it will start peeling.

I also noticed that there is this painted strip on the inside of the "lip" of the wheel well (it's the inner most protrusion in the picture). It has some flex to it and may be rubber padding of some sort.

Does anyone know how it can be removed/how it's attached? If so, I may ask the body shop to remove that first before clearcoating (if they agree to redo the clearcoat on the whole panel) to get a really clean cut of where the clearcoat ends. I am guessing since it's rubber and flexes, it would be a terrible idea to have actually clearcoat reaching onto it.

TheRealBFKR, I'm ah feared that you are waaaay over analyzing this situation - :sigh:

I'd suggest you just leave it alone.

When you get out here to the PNW, ain't nobody gonna notice and if you should bring it up - someone is gonna have you committed to Western State (look it up).

Now, you can get on with your life - :)

It came off when I rolled my rear quarter panels, but I'm with the other guys, you're thinking too far into it.

Honestly appreciate the comments. I guess I was just afraid that it was going to start flaking... Dirt also gets trapped in the hard edge.

I suggest you clean the dirt out with a soft brush, then fill up the hard edge with wax, wipe off the excess.

sorry i missed your last PM. that is seam sealer. it is applied to the primed body before it is painted. if you peel it off, it has to be re applied then painted over. even after doing this for years, it will never look the same as how the robot did it initially. doubt you will ever have any issues as it.

The shop did think the hard edge around the wheel well was an issue. They compounded (lightly sanded) and overall cleaned up the area for me. It would have been nice for them to have done a cleaner job and let the new coat end closer inside the wheel well, but it is what it is. If you don't think it's gonna start flaking (they certainly don't think it's gonna), I am moving on.
