For daily driving, thin is the win. After all, the gears are all headed in the same direction. Not like our differential where the gears are trying to rip each other's face off.

The MT-LV looks like it has great potential for a daily driver. Under their OEM Compatibility tab it even calls out "Toyota/Scion manual transmissions" and says it's a replacement for GL4/3/1. It is 6.5cSt@100C, and should immediately appeal to the Pentosin crowd.

I have Torco MTF in my car now (put 50k miles on it) and it's fine for the street car but I don't like how Torco changed their MTF from GL4 to GL5 I used it in the race car, even on a new transmission and I simply couldn't shift quickly without a "crunch" because the fluid didn't allow the synchros to work. Swapped out for both Pennzoil SM and Honda OEM and I did 3 full seasons without a "crunch".

Have you driven the Motul 300 that everyone raves about?


I swapped to that in my (mostly track) FR-S and routinely get crunches, so I'm looking for other options.

Try Redline. Can confirm that it's better than Motul. Even in the cold

How’s Redline after a few track day/at the track? I’m using Motul 300 and it’s awesome once it’s heats up, but as it’s getting colder it’s very annoying to deal with. I can’t engaged second smoothly until what seems like 20 minutes of regular driving. I can’t imagine what it’s like once it hits -30.

Surprisingly it was still better than OEM. As for track performance, I've never actually taken the car to the track

I've been using this for the majority of my transmission's life and it seems to be solid without any serious issues of crunching/gate problems (except once a month or so, maybe shifting too fast).

Supposedly Motul says this gear is for transmissions that are hard to shift/noisy.

I have not run that and for the same reason I mentioned earlier.. Full synthetic is often the cause of the "crunch" because its shear strength keeps the synchronizer from grabbing the gear cone.

But I'm not hard-and-fast on that ideology either. I think a full synthetic that's thin enough would allow the synchro-to-cone interface to be sufficient but I haven't found one yet. That's why the new Redline MT-LV and Amsoil synchromesh (5w-30) are intriguing. I will be trying them again once I get this new racecar built (hint, it's an FRS).

Ive been running Pentosin MTF2 for 20,000 miles and its been great! Winters in Milwaukee and summers in Orlando. No grinding, catching or hard shifts. Butter smooth and Im NOT using a weighted shifter. Its one of those Ebay TRD delrin shifters. Really light.

You're doing it backwards. Most folks go south for the winter.

We moved for a full year. We did skip a winter, 2018-2019. I guess it got to -40 here in WI, so we lucked out.

But it was for reference. Worst of the worst.
