My favourite racing series in the world! The BRZ just won Round 6 at Sugo this past weekend. It is an incredibly exciting series to watch and I have been doing so for years, finally getting a chance to watch it in person at Round 1 in Okayama this year.
There are 8 Rounds per year at all the iconic tracks in Japan (with 1 round in Thailand last couple years). Super GT has two classes, GT500 & GT300, that race 2 independent races but at the same time on track!
GT500 is reserved for the big three Japanese manufacturers (Honda, Toyota & Nissan) with mostly Works (OEM-backed) teams. Each manufacturer fields a car, with 4-5 of each making up the GT500 field (NSX-GT, LC500, GTR). These cars are all powered by the same 2.0L 4 cyl that makes about 650hp.
GT300 is much more varied in terms of manufacturers, cars and teams. Here you find many European brands in the field (Audi, Mercedes, BMW, McLaren, Ferrari, Lambourghini and even Bentley) in addition to many independent teams. As someone above mentioned, there are many different types of cars in GT300 including JAF GT300 cars (Japanese spec GT3 cars including the BRZ & Toyota Prius), regular GT3 cars that make up the bulk of the field as well as 'Mother Chassis' cars as a way for independent teams to compete at a lower entry cost. Engines range from small 4 cylinders to massive V8s, however all of them make roughly 400-500hp.
I could go into way more details about the tyre war, multiple drivers or other interesting regulations, but I simply suggest watching a race! Several former and future F1 drivers are in or have driven in Super GT (Jenson Button is currently driving in the GT500 class for the Raybrig NSX team), so it attracts huge international talent.
For those of us who cannot watch the races on TV due to the limited broadcast, NismoTV on Youtube livestreams every race in HD and has the last several years uploaded to their channel with full English commentary. Great place to watch - glad more of you are discovering this great racing series!
