2017 OEM block reinforcement
Anyone have any pics or solid info in this?

I'm just asking because I was looking at maybe boosting it a little. But if it's a open deck that will mean a whole lot extra work for me to be happy doing it. I did have a google and search, maybe my searching Kung Fu is weak, or I'm just old and senile. |

Charging it wouldn't be smart marketing for Toyota or Subaru, in reality it is only a small percentage of people who would buy one, which wouldn't make it financially viable IRT all the R&D and modifications required. Look at the OEM turbo MX5, minimal extra power for alot more cash, not alot sold, Mazda only had them for a couple of years, they weren't financially viable. And even the turbo MX5's ended up having alot of the OEM bolt ons replaced to chase more power. How much would pay for a charged 86? There are other cars available if you want more power anyway. Subaru has the WRX/STI, they won't drop another car in that price bracket. Toyota will soon have the Supra, 2 typical Toyota rwd turbo sports cars competing for sales is not going to happen. If you want more power just build the motor and drivetrain to handle what you want and bolt on a supercharger or turbo, easy. In the end, there ain't nothin to it but to do it. Opinions may vary |
If a non Turbo one was 34k new I would pay 42k new for a Turbo one, big brakes. All it would need is a Tune (knowing Subaru loves to detune the crap out of the WRX) and the thing is a weapon. Light weight, Reliable OEM turbo engine no fuc$king around with Turbo kits and is my engine going to blow up because it cant take the power.

As a previous owner of a "stage 2+" 2015 WRX STI, anything over 300hp can be a long term reliability issue.
For the twins to be reliable at 300hp all you need to do at look at what "experienced" builders/tuners consider required mods. For me, to be happy with putting around 300hp with ??? torques to the ground in a twin, with what I would concider long term reliability, I'm looking at between 20 to 25k. Sure you do it much cheaper, but how long will it last. Now, bring in the added reliability required by the OEM manufacturer, they will need to warranty it. Now your looking at upgrading the whole power and drivetrains, not to mention additional strengthening of the chassis. All this for a small market of buyers. Here in AU a Impreza costs 25k, a wrx cost 40k, thats 15k extra. Here in AU a twin cost upwards of 40k, adding 15k to that would put it in STI territory. I would love to see a OEM turbo twin, but when you bring costings, demand and the ability for a manufacturer to make the required profit to keep the manufacturers happy and rolling in profit, sadly I cannot see it ever happening. Hence why I have been researching a build even before I purchased the car, give me another 6 months, and if I'm happy with my research and expected outcomes, I'll have my 300hp and ??? torques to play with. If not, I'll flip it in a couple of years or give it to one of my kids, I'll then find some other toy to suit my new requirements and desires. |

Feel like they could have just put 11-1 compression, maybe forged rods. And run 9psi and hit about 280hp on 93 reliably. And then have a 10-1 lbs-hp ratio from factory for about 32k msrp for base model manual. And it would be perfectly priced With good power from the factory.
I paid 28k for a 2017 - 86 auto w/ spoiler out the door. Having 11-1 compression wouldn’t cost more If that was what initially came with it. Forged rods wouldn’t be too much more, And a turbo at least save a little not having factory header. Could do it for probably 5k if built that way from the start and should still be pretty reliable. |
