Just like medial billing. You think uninsured paying under the table pays the same as the HMO?

$7500 is the inflated book price paid by insurance.
In actuality, you can get that work done out of pocket under the table for under $5000. Or, typically about 60%-70% of retail robo-quotes.

My estimate, $4000, was for paying cash to get it fixed, at a competitive indy shop.
Not the inflated insurance quote, which individuals do not pay in real life.
Others were saying it's totaled, despite book value being at least $15k

1) This is in Canada - $7500 usd is about $9700 cdn, it's also really hard to find a shop that'll do cash work for significantly less up here, typically the most you'll save is the tax (13% in Ontario).

2) It is going through insurance, so your backdoor shop theory doesn't matter

Update: Got a call from insurance today. Body shop has all the parts and is starting repairs today. Estimated to be completed Oct 18 funny enough the completed estimate went from $7500 to $7200. So we'll see in a few weeks.............. 49 days later.......

Update: Suspension parts on back order. Body shop "hopes to have it done by the end of the week"... rental extended. Currently 52 days with the Sonata and put ~4k km on it.

Just curious. Has the shop shared with you details about the damage? Maybe it's a good sign that they are taking their time with the work. I know little about the business side of these things.

Fingers crossed for you. Hope it comes out perfectly.

OK so the shop didn't have all the parts so the price can still go up.

Final update: I got the car back yesterday ~4pm. Final cost $7218.XX CAD. I spent quite a bit of time driving it yesterday to get a feel for it and honestly it feels exactly how I left it, and it looks brand new. Obviously that's only half the story, I'm still taking it back to Toyota to have it inspected. Yesterday made 2 months exactly.

No it is $7218 Canadian. He didn't pay in US$ so exchange rate means nothing. It would have cost just as much in the US not less because of an artificially generated dollar value. Just consider it the same no matter which country.

I would be pissed if my car got repaired instead of written off with that much damage

Well yeah but hard to justify a new $30k car over a $7k repair to insurance...
