So I've got Throwout bearing noises :( While I'm in there...
Hello!
My clutch is making noises when cold: 1) sometimes, when i clutch in after a start, it'll growl / grumble until i lift off the clutch. 2) other times it'll chirp / squeal like a bad belt until I DO push the clutch in. Anyhoo, it's one of a few things, all of which are in the transmission - thus, it's coming out! While I'm in there I wondered what I should do to make a few little upgrades? This is mostly a highway daily driver that I enjoy driving around corners sometimes, scooting through parking lots, a little autocross, etc. Any recommendations? Replacement clutch kits? Lightweight flywheels? Transmission mounts, engine mounts? Headers? Exhaust systems? I've got 85K miles on the car and I have not really done a lot of modding yet (TRD intake and that's about it). Wide open to suggestions! |
I just changed mine and upgraded to an ACT clutch kit with lightened flywheel. No regrets. It makes some NVH, especially at idle with ac on and decel. I followed general forum advice to change fork and pivot for the verus versions at the same time. While the transmission is out of the car, it would allow a much easier installation of the Cusco carrier bushings and mtech springs, both of which I managed with the transmission in place, but were fiddly. You could also do the Perrin shifter bushing at the same time, this was easier to do on its own, but you’ll remove it in the process anyhow. After installing the clutch and fw, I found the engine mounts lacking and quickly changed them, the drivetrain play was still a little too much to launch the car smoothly on the new clutch, although it was easier once broken in. I also have the whiteline transmission and diff bushings.
There’s the same ACT kit on the NorCal buy/sell forum for 500usd right now, sadly his car was totaled. |
Go for the perrin rear stop kit positive shift kit with whiteline transmission mount insert.

Just replace the TOB with the updated part. Replace the quill if it's all gouged. Clean and grease the pivots.
Don't change up any other shit unless you have a specific issue to address. |
If you are cracking open the transmission you might consider doing more if you have plans for FI someday or track time. This is what I did:
—perrin shift bushing —MTEC shift springs —whiteline transmission bushing —exedy stage one (OEM with enough for pump gas power on FI) —verus forged fork —verus billet pivot —quality oil (motul, amsoil or something) —resurface flywheel This steup is comprehensive enough with an OEM feeling clutch that it is streetable unlike some clutches but should be able to handle any FI that wouldn’t require a built block and/or e85 excluively. |
Does anyone have any info on how Verus forks are faring out? Have your TOB issues disappeared after switching to Verus? Has anyone done significant mileage on these forks?
