saw my old flame
earlier this year, i sadly had to sell my '15 brz so that my wife and i could make the numbers work on a house. i'd put a lot of little things and a lot of love into it and was super sad to see her go. but lo and behold, while i was driving this weekend i pulled up on my ole ride on the highway just as it was pulling off an exit. i was happy to see that it looked good, really the only change that i saw was a pair of fuzzy dice.
hopefully will put myself in another one sometime soon, either that or a 1st/2nd gen cayman. i miss having smiles in my drives.. |
Back in 2003 I bought one of the very first Lancers ever imported into Canada. It was a yellow OZ Racing Rallie Edition that drew a shitload of attention around here back then. I lowered, supercharged and in general riced it right out. That car and I spent the next 4 years and almost 200,000 miles driving around for work.
I loved it but at that mileage, even though it was still in great shape, I knew I was on borrowed time so I finally gave in and traded it for an 08 GTS. I got almost nothing for it and the dealer immediately put it on a truck and sent it to auction in a city about 2 hours away. About two weeks later a yellow OZ showed up down the street from me. It only took me about 30 seconds to realize it was my old flame! I stopped and talked to the new owner and was glad that it was in good hands. That guy drove the poor old thing another 100K over the next few years. It got totaled in a rear end accident (who can't see a bright yellow car stopped in front of them?) about two years ago. When totaled it was still rust free and had never had any major work done on it beyond the normal maintenance required on a high mileage car. It can be fun seeing your old car especially when it is obviously giving somebody else pleasure. |

I used to see my old flame's old flame. My ex-girlfriend sold her car (after we broke up) to some guy in our neighbourhood so I used to see him driving around in it once in a while, lol. It was a very clean Mazda RX3

At that point in time I had to have a totally reliable vehicle (well as reliable as you can get) since I drove almost 50K a year and could not have the car down for even a short time. That meant no taking chances to try to drag it out a bit longer. It was also the time period where I lost the shop space I had and all my tools and equipment got "stolen" (my father swore he had nothing to do with their disappearance) so I said screw it and stopped doing my own major work. |

I don't want to even think of my old flame. Poor thing. 2009 Jetta TDI, with 60K when I turned her in due to emission scandal. had to remove and revert back to stock, the aftermarket alloy rims, coilovers, DPF delete and EGR delete pipes, and the tunes, She had torque to spare :D But now she probable has been scrapped :( |

One of the planes I learned to fly in was a Cessna 172 with extended range tanks that made it heavy and sluggish in the summer but very predictable. It was a great plane for students and saw a lot of private pilot check rides. But with the weight of the extra fuel, it was close to its weight limit with two full grown men in it on hot days. Even though I didn't own it, I loved that little plane.
Along came an FBI agent/pilot who rented the plane, put three other 200+ lb cops in it with him and tried to take off with both wings full on a 100 degree day despite a clear density altitude warning in the weather brief. When he was still so low on takeoff that the trees across from the airport were looming large in his windscreen, he yanked back on the yoke in a useless attempt to avoid them, stalled the plane, dropped the left wing and spun nose first right into the golf course, destroying the plane and the cops inside it in a spectacular fireball that closed the airport for a couple of hours. That little plane had survived 20 years of first solos, first landings, first solo cross countries, first instrument flights, you name it. It even survived a student getting lost over North Florida, running it out of fuel and having to make an emergency landing at the wrong airport (not me). To be done in by a hot dog imbecile who didn't understand weight limits and density altitude on a hot Florida day was an insult. That's my old flame story. Or old fireball story. |

I sold my last Jeep Gladiator to a friend, who shipped it to his brother in Michigan. He loves it and takes it to car meets and cruises. He sends me pics. You can't get patina like that in Michigan. He had it clear coated. Fun to know someone is giving it love.

I had an 02 or 03 H6 outback I really liked until the back fell off (rear subframe literally fell apart). I sold it to a guy with a tow truck and a few weeks later saw it in a parking lot. Now with stickers. I was happy it was still alive.

My first ever brand new car was a 2015 Fiesta ST. The car was an absolute blast to drive and was very charming in its quirks. I traded it for a 2017 WRX and felt sad every time I saw it out in town. New owner doesn't love it like I did.
Traded that same 2017 WRX for my current 2014 BRZ. Don't miss the WRX like I missed the Fiesta ST. |

My first ever race car was a 95 Eclipse GST. Was looking for a GSX but we all know how impossible it is to find one in good condition. While I never did sell this car (I had to get rid of it after I cracked the engine block), whenever I see another 90s Eclipse it makes me really miss mine.
Also I had to get rid of my 2004 S2000 due to financial reasons. Every single time I see one on the road I always seem to say "I miss my S2000" to the point where I drive my roommates and my friends nuts cuz I say it so often lol. |
I had a brand new 2008 Audi A4 titanium package that I totaled like an idiot. I had it for 4 years and did all kinds of stuff to it and was the first person to install a “Funk” (radio in German) button in the B7 A4. Losing the car was devastating and I thought it would end up in a junk yard.
A year letter I get a Facebook message from a guy in Mexico in broken English asking about my car. Turns out I left my insurance information in the glovebox, and he became the proud new owner of my flame lol. I’d rather have had my car die then and there, but I was glad that it still existed thousands of miles away giving joy to someone else. Although the cam follower probably grenaded the fuel pump by now, but such is Audi life. |
