How do you install the mud guards?
 

I just got my mud guards in the mail and I'm a little lost at the moment on how to install them properly. They didn't come with any instructions and there are a bunch of screws and tiny metal clips that came with them that I have no idea what to do with. Anyone else put these on yet? Or know a link to install instructions?

I tried searching but not much info on here just yet. If I had a little more time before I go to work I'd just play around with them myself but I figured I'd ask now so if anybody knows I'll be ready when I get home tonight. If not, then I guess I'll be writing up another DIY tomorrow!

I did some googling and found the installation instructions. The do require a little drilling, but all of the holes are inside the wheel well.

I've been putting off looking for the instructions myself. The box mine came in said:

"The installation instructions for this accessory are in the Toyota Information System (TIS). Please see your dealer for a copy."

Haven't taken the time to do that, but I'm approaching the 5K service anyway which includes tire rotation so I was debating just having the dealer do it while they have the tires off.

I am budgeting around an hour to install them myself, but I'm guessing it would take a dealer 20 minutes or so, especially if the wheels are already off. As I said there is a little bit of drilling, and the rear wheels need to come off.

Correct - only the rear wheels need to come off. Your estimate of 20 minutes dealer time is also right on.

The drilling required is only one new hole drilled per wheel. The great news is that you're drilling into a plastic shield\guard not metals.

They are fairly easy to install as long as you don't lose any of the reusable parts that came with the car. The instructions are fairly accurate. Good luck

im not a fan of the mud guards, they break up the lines of the car.

are the spring clips stainless steel or will they rust?

Good question. I'm a little skeptical on that.

If it's worth anything, I've had the mud guards on my tC since about a month after i got it in 2005 and there is no rust to be had. Same install method too with the drilling, so I'm sure this will be just fine too.

You could always coat them with a rust inhibitor like LPS 3.

I use this stuff on many things and it works pretty well.
If they are not touching any other metal parts, then you needn't worry if the clips rust other than from an aesthetic perspective.
