Timing chain sprocket tooth broke
 

Is this a common problem? Had complete engine tear down and reassemble with high quality parts less than a year ago. I do not believe in coincidences...less than 50k miles and a tooth breaks off of sprocket? Is this incompetence from a shop that has never done an FRS/BRZ before or is this a common problem. Any info. is greatly appreciated.

I've not heard of this problem before on this car on this forum.

If the engine were not put back together properly, I doubt it would have run for a year.

Even if the chain tensioner got slacked off to the point where the chain jumped the sprocket, it would be unusual for it to break a tooth off the sprocket, unless it jammed inside the housing.

Do you have any pictures of the damage?

Was the sprocket NOT an OEM part?

Tooth breaking off is weird. Normally indicates a casting or heat treating issue on the gear, assuming it was a clean break.

Thank you all for the replies. Sorry for such a delay in responding. The entire situation feels horribly hopeless. No one ever has the courage to take responsibility and do the right thing any more.
Nothing can be proven for sure, but you can ask what is the mostly likely explanation...An unheard of problem occurring or something went wrong during the assembly process by a shop who has never done a subaru motor before causing failure after less than 10k miles. Even if nothing can be proven, a business should be smart enough to know that potential damage to their reputation is at stake. They should at least try to work with you.

Everything in the motor is OEM except the pistons, rods, and bearings. And the car has an oil cooler and sump system.
A tooth breaking off of a timing sprocket is unheard of among the members of this forum, but this is what the shop is saying that caused the catastrophic failure. Classic example of deflection of responsibility...blame it on something they did not do. Problem is...they did everything in that motor.

You never did tell us what was wrong with the car before. It could be related.

The company that makes the sprocket doesn't have a warranty of any kind?
