Not enough negative camber? It looks like they fiddled with toe, nothing else.

What do you have on the car for adjusting camber (assuming bolts up front, all stock in the rear)?

SPC Cam bolts in the front and SPC camber arms in the rear.

I would advise more camber for tracking. You can get more camber from those parts. For the fronts use the bottom OEM bolt on the top slot of the knuckle and use the 14 mm SPC bolt for the bottom slot.

I noticed you were local as well. Not sure which shop you went to get your alignment but Elite Performance in Burlingame works on a bunch of our cars and they have never failed to get me excellent alignments.

If you plan on tracking you should come out to a 86 Drive Challenge event with us. See you at the track!

After this alignment, I'm looking for a new place so I'll be checking Elite Performance out. :w00t:

I was planning on 86 drive challenge, so just a matter of time before you'll see me out there.

I got an alignment at Elite and was only able to get similar numbers in the front with camber bolts (-1.6). With lowering springs on my previous car I got -1.9 (also at Elite). Considering camber plates once I’m not worried about stock class in 86 Drive anymore. :)

Did you try the trick by putting the OEM bolt on the top slot and the SPC bolt on the bottom for more camber? Should be able to get at least -2 degrees or more.

tony_r 08-09-2018 01:10 AM

SPC + 14mm bolts can get up to -3.3 degrees with a 40mm offset wheel. Definitely can get a lot more if they know what they're doing.

Expect understeer

mkodama 08-09-2018 01:12 PM

I’m pretty annoyed at $280 for this “track alignment” where all they did was reduce rear left camber to factory specs and didn’t install the 14mm bolts like I asked.

Icecreamtruk 08-09-2018 01:34 PM

Well go back and argue with them, because that is not a track alignement by a long shot. Not enough camber anywhere, toe-in in the rear but 0 toe on the front. If your objectif at the track is to destroy the shoulders of your tires while enjoying massive amounts of understeer, then this is really good...

tony_r 08-09-2018 01:39 PM

It's further for you, but Auto Innovations in Milpitas can put in custom settings for ~$120 (typically $80 but more for strut cars).

$280 is a ripoff, even for "knowledge" etc from a race shop. I would never return.

:confused0068: Holy shit man. Yeah, I wouldn't return to that shop. Usual rate in the Bay for custom alignments for track cars run $120 from what I've seen.

Code Monkey 08-09-2018 04:16 PM

$75 here for any specs I want, at $280 I would say fuck it and buy my own equipment, at those rates it would pay for itself in a year or two.

treedodger 08-09-2018 06:52 PM

I would return to your shop and ask them to get more front camber, using camber bolts; you paid for it. Most 86's get between -2 to -3 deg camber with an SPC 81305 Camber Bolt on the bottom and the lower OEM 14mm bottom bolt moved to the top.

That said, alignment will not be what's holding you back at the track, but you might see slightly shorter tire life.

86Drive Challenge has all skill levels, from super fast to novice. This is my first year tracking, and I'm having a blast with the 86Drive Challenge group. Fun to have a bunch of similarly set up cars on the track at the same time. There are also lots of friendly experienced folks to help get the most out of your 86.

Where are you getting that done?

Mansel's in Bryan. You can even bring weights or whatever if you want to simulate the driver's weight.

Where/when do you all go to the track? I've been to Harris Hill several times and have not seen any other 86s, just Miatas as far as the eye can see and a few Porsches and S2000s.

MSR Houston, MSR Cresson, COTA, Eagles Canyon. Have not been to Harris Hill yet.

I’m going to be at Harris Hill next weekend again, but I’m planning to set up time to take training at MSR Houston next. I’m ready to start branching out to other tracks I think.

14stu 09-02-2018 08:57 PM

We had 7 twins at msr Cresson for the scca time trials last weekend, and a couple more were on the other half of the track doing a member's day.

I know work keeps you busy, but you really need to start making regular track weekends to learn how to share the track with other cars and be safe. Passing, being passed, on straights, in corners, watching your mirrors, riding someone's butt, seeing corner workers and flags, all of this takes time and practice and you will not learn it if you only do private coaching. Plus, you will get to experience the best part of it all -- meeting other folks who share your passion and often go way out of their way to help you when shit happens. :)

Join our Facebook group for Austin 86 Club as well as Houston 86 Club, if you'd like. I try to set up events or get interest for various driver events (HPDE events, Auto X, drift days).

Hey man sorry to bump an old thread but this trash shop in Columbus, GA called wolf autoworks or something like that, did my alignment. Charged me he same price, and the guy didn’t tighten my tie rod ends, gave me -6 degrees rear camber, and reason being my bill was so high is they were unable to figure out how to raise my coilovers (kwv3) they suggested they might be bent and use a spacer. Idiots. After fixing it, due to their incompetence, I changed my rlca’s our to SPL, since the other arms I used were to slam the car, ignorance on my end. Nonetheless I paid a ton for some idiots who can’t learn to read the KW manual. I hate shops that take advantage of service members, they prey on nice guys like me, but hey I feel bad. They need to make a living some how, even if they’re incompetent. Fake it til ya make it!!
