Rear view camera

Hey I just noticed on some models of the latter versions (17+) that the rear view camera outputs to the head unit, but in other instances they output to the rear view mirror instead.

Does this give a little advantage to changing the head unit not having to fiddle around with the connections for the rear view camera if its located on the rear view mirror?

It seemed like it was a thing with the Canadian models, and I was just curious.

Outputting to the rear view mirror on an 86? Are you sure that's not a aftermarket item? I like the mirror because your instinctive look at the mirror when you reverse compared to the headunit but the image is so small in comparison.

MY17 reverse camera goes through the headunit.

I think it applies to the MY18 with the updated climate control and push button start.

I have MY 18. Rear camera is on rear view mirror. I think the picture is more useful on the head unit b/c it would be a lot larger and easier to see.

That's strange. I have a 2018 BRZ, and the backup camera displays on the head unit. Didn't realize Toyota and Subaru were different in that regard.

This is likely a 2017 vs 2018 thing. Online copy of the 2018 owner's manual has this on p.237:
The rear view monitor assists the driver by displaying an image of the area behind the vehicle while reversing. The image is displayed in reverse on the screen. This reversed image is a similar image to the one on the inside rear view mirror.
Picture on the page seems to say video output is only at the left little bit of the rear view mirror.

For year 2017, "rear view monitor system" is on p.17 of the quick reference guide. The whole section has like 4 single sentence paragraphs, then it says "For more details, refer to the Owner’s Manual details." Except there is not a single mention of the feature in the owner's manual. It does take up the whole head unit screen though. I use this all the time, so trust me :)

Yes I have a 2018 GT and the rear view picture is displayed on the rear view mirror, very annoying since it is so small its hard to see objects clearly. Wish they would have just left it alone and displayed it on the headunit screen like other normal cars....

Anyone have a photo of the 2018 rear view mirror?

My 16 FRS has the camera in the head unit.

I believe because all cars must now have a rearview camera per NHTSA rules, that they put it in the rear view mirror as it's easier to deal with as head units change and go through multiple iterations throughout years, whereas the rear view mirror display does not.
