Drove my FR-S today, crashed

Hi all, new member here. A friend recently lost traction and slid into a curb, deploying the side airbag and damaging his rear wheel and suspension.

He asked me to help him repair it but I'm a Chevy guy, so my experience with these cars is limited. I've attached a photo of the damage and will inspect the damage further tomorrow.

It looks pretty straight forward to me. Side airbag, headliner, airbag module, wheel, tire, control arms, bearings, axle, shocks, bumper clips. I would appreciate any tips on what to look for and where to find replacement parts and I will post more pictures of the tear down and repairs as we progress.

Did he not have insurance? it is an accident after all.

He's insured, but in the interest of keeping his premium low, he'd rather fix it himself. If the damage looks extensive (more than $2,500 in repairs) then he'll claim it.

Man that's a lucky hit if there isn't also quarter panel damage.

I assume you have already checked the rear subframe and mounts for damage and found none. Also, I'm not sure how that kind of load could have affected the diff.

I have a feeling that the repair parts are going to exceed $2,500, especially since the air bag went off … :sigh:

Had the same accident 2 years ago (spun out in rain, drivers side rear wheel hit curb, cracked wheel and bent suspension).

had it repaired by a Toyota dealer in Toronto. Was about 7600$CAD total.
About half was for the airbag , the other half for the suspension.

I can send an invoice if you’re interested

I would be surprised honestly, unless the prices I'm seeing are wrong. For example, I found an airbag for $150 on ebay. I'm guessing a module and programming are another $200-300.

Could suspension damage cost more than $2,000?

Of course my pricing is assuming that my friend and I will be shopping parts around, we wouldn't pay full MSRP prices, and we'll do the labor ourselves.

Seems all straight forward till you realize down the line that the frame is now tweaked.

Besides all the stuff in the cabin that needs to be replaced.

I'd be looking at the entire rear suspension, subframe and all.

Well, let's hope the expense is less.

It just seems that these days, everything costs twice as much as I think it should...:sigh:

I might be one of those times when you would replace a part or two and discover the car don't drive right, then you replace another part or two and find the car still don't drive right …

Heres the actual invoice.
It came out to 4621 for parts and 1836 for labor (about 7300 after taxes)

After I got the car back, i noticed the fuel gauge sensor was broken too. They fixed it under warranty, and said they replaced a sensor in the fuel pump.

Thank you for that invoice. Having all the part numbers makes the search much easier.

I've attached some new photos with the wheel off.
