[Resolved] Wheel shop overbored lug nut holes. Potential issues?
 

Hey all,


Recently, I took my wheels to a repair shop to get my lug nut hole faces/tapers resurfaced to smooth (60 deg taper).


However, when I got my wheels back, I noticed they also bored out the holes from M12 to M15 (in addition to the requested countersink). I didn't ask for a bore-out, so I'm going to ask the shop for refund/repair/replace.


In the event they hose me over or my options are limited, do you see any causes for concern with using as-is?

• The taper is still 60 degrees
• I'm concerned with getting proper contact with the lug nuts since the wheels are lug centric.

I've looked around and notice wheels from other makes sometimes have M15 holes on wheels for the 86.


I talked to the shop and they agreed to refund me. Based on some calculations and fit checks, it looks like I'll be able to use my lug nuts just fine so I won't pursue much further

Well, that's new. Haven't heard that one.
Guess the quick way to make them work properly is to get bigger/wider lug nuts.

You can do a quick check to see how much contact your current nuts hold the wheel. Get a marker and give it a good paint over on the nuts tapper. While it's still fresh quickly drop it into the wheel and give it a wiggle.

If it made contact with over 50% of the tapper it ok. Less, well it's your call.

Make them fix or replace them. That's pretty inexcusable on their part.

Are you sure they were actually bored bigger? Even my factory wheels fit loose on the studs until the lugs are tightened down.

Were the wheels bored out using a CNC lathe or Mill?

Yes they're bigger. My stock wheels and my other set of aftermarket wheels have a bore sized at 13mm. My friend also has the same wheels, and the bore is the same.

It may not be a problem. The aftermarket wheels on my BMW fit both the M12 and M14 lug bolts BMW uses.

As suggested above, check the % engagement with the lug seats, go from there.

Shit that's a really dumb mistake then, easy g code edit and what not.


Honestly they'd have to add material back by welding and that sounds sketchy or weld in a cylinder of some type in and remill that. They should pay the value of the wheels because of their mistake...

I'd expect the shop to replace the wheels with a new set and refund whatever you paid them for the work that was done (assuming they made you pay already).

I've never measured my stock wheels, but there's way more than 1mm of space around the lugs.

Lug-centric wheels? Is that even a thing?

Yeah. From what I recall when I put a caliper to the stock wheels, they're pretty close to 13mm. I can post a picture later today.
