Subaru Part# 74241AS00
 

Howdy All,


There's an air bleeder plug in an elbow on the heater core return line that's part of the coolant system you have to open during coolant filling. The part number I got for this from the dealership is 74241AS00 but when I google this I don't find any mentions of at all (no results returned). They're saying it'll take 2 weeks to get here and cost me $46 for what is essentially a plastic screw... not even the whole elbow piece.


I've unfortunately stripped the head out of it with my screwdriver, and I am mid-project (nearing the final stages). Can anyone look up this part number and confirm I was told the correct part, and possibly somebody help me figure out what the Toyota part number is so I can possibly call around to find one? $46 and 2 weeks for a plastic screw seems obscene.

So you still have the plug, the only problem is the head is stripped? I'm trying to picture the plug in my head and if I recall you should be able to screw it in by hand. It's not like it requires a ton of torque. If it leaks then you will have to suck it up and wait. I bet you can salvage what you have with some creativity. Maybe glue something to the top of it to give you some leverage.

I'm not finding anything for that part number either. Maybe they gave you the wrong number. Someone else was looking for that plug a few weeks ago. I looked on the Toyota and Subaru sites and couldn't find this plug. I just did a google search for "subaru bleeder plug" and found pictures of a plug that looks similar to ours. The plug is fully seated in its current position, my only concern is that I'm not sure if I'm done with the bleeding cycles (crank engine, race engine to 3000rpm 5 times, shut off engine, wait a minute for engine to cool, check radiator fluid level). I basically overtorqued it putting it in, which is what caused the head to strip so it's 100% my fault. I think I can move on and be okay.


What's odd is I have access to a copy of TIS for the 2017 Toyota 86 and I don't see the part listed anywhere in the exploded parts diagrams. The bleeder plug you found looks like something different, but maybe it's the same part. For $8 I'd be willing to find out.

Should be #72441SA000, that # supersedes to #72442SA000, looks like $26-$40 depending on mark up. The new part number is # is the elbow, o-ring and screw together.

Edit - Those are the Subaru part numbers, no idea on Toyota's.

Thanks both for your help. I called Subaru Parts Superstore on the phone and the guy was able to send me the exploded parts diagram with the part code and the supersede notice. I've ordered it from them, takes 3 days to get here and costs a little over $20. Still crazy for a plastic screw but better than $46 and 2 weeks.

Even though I don't need the elbow, I went ahead and ordered this because it has both the screw and a replacement o-ring. Since I probably overtorqued it, which is why I stripped the head I'm guessing I should also replace the o-ring since it may have been damaged.


Side note, the reason I couldn't get any results in google for the part number the dealership gave me is the guy read it out to me wrong (I confirmed it with him).

Ahh.. I found it finally. It's under Heating and AC because it's one the lines headed to the heater core.

It would be cool to know if the plug on just about every other Subaru would also fit our car. $8 for just the plug beats $20 for the whole thing. I've seen a few people on the forum asking for this plug. If someone knows someone with another Subaru it would be cool if you could test to see if the plug is interchangeable.
