Preferred oil filter?
 

I suspect there's a thread on this somewhere, but my search didn't find it. I got one from Subaru for my first change, but wonder if there's a preferred aftermarket brand.

A lot of people will reccomend the Tokyo roki Subaru filter. Subaru often tries to sell you a different filter since they're usually not familiar with the brz.

I have used cusco and k&n. Cutaways all look fine, but I do like the k&n for the welded on nut that's easy to remove.

I have not seen a ton of bypass issue threads like you do with a Mazda skyactiv so I just generally get the k&n with the synthetic that advance has on sale. The cutaways and reviews (extensive) on bobisthoilguy shows that the k&n is a decent filter.

So.... me, personally.... cost and ease of obtaining i lean towards k&n. If i drive the hour or find the Tokyo roki filter on sale i go for that. Really no in between for me on this one anymore.

I just use the Mobil 1 filters. On sale 90% of the time and it's gonna do the job. If price didn't make as much of a difference, k&n would be my pick.

I've always preferred Wix/XP filters. They're available at O'Riley's.

When I want to save a few bucks oem, when I want to treat myself, mobile 1.
Pretty much depends how cheap I want to be.

Tokyo Roki. I like them short thick & black

OEM from Toyota or Subaru. Same/Same.

I've been using Purolator PureOne for decades (on various cars) and never had an issue.

There are only a handful of actual manufacturers, which kind of makes it a PITA to pick a good one. OEMs occasionally switch manufacturers, which makes it even more of a PITA.

I'm with Spuds on Mobil1. If I can't get my hands on an OEM one (this past oil change I couldn't get to my local dealer for my filter, and had a road trip coming up, couldn't wait for the next day) I've never had issues with Mobil1 filters. While grabbing my 6th quart of Castrol I snagged a Mobil1 filter. Used them on my previous two daily drivers. I can't say they're any better or worse than any others, but they do work.

The only thing I will stay away from is Fram. There is such a thing as being too cheap, and saving a few bucks isn't worth that larger risk of ruining an engine to me.

8RZ also called out another good brand. Purolator is good quality, always has been, and they own some of the other brand names out there and make their filters, so in some cases you could be buying a rebranded Purolator and not know it. Thankfully, that's not a bad thing.

As always, YMMV. If I can't do OEM, I get a Mobil1.

Good call on Fram, I also avoid them at all cost because I (as well as my friends) have had bad experiences with them, mainly with the gaskets.

OEM fat black filters since day 1

The WIX 57830 or Napa Gold 7830 (made by WIX) seem to be good. I was looking at the PurolatorONE filter for our cars and it looks identical to the WIX. Not sure if WIX is actually making all these filters or if some chinese company makes them all and Purolator, Napa and WIX all buy from the same supplier.

I actually used the PureONE filter in my car after I rebuilt the engine. I only ran it for a few days before doing a filter/oil change. I need to cut it open and see how it looks.
