It's simple. Someone needs to make one without the bomb! I could see how that would probably drop the price by half.

Yeah that would totally solve that problem. Toyota should totally sell the stand alone airbag. That would make things so much easier.

Most enthusiasts would agree that this car should've came as a Toyota and I am returning mine to what it should've been. If you don't, that's you. Don't really give a crap.

I made this thread so people who want to do this mod can see that it can be done and won't get discouraged (like I almost did) when they see that the charges for the airbags are different. I was not going to do this swap if it was going to compromise the functionality of my airbag and I'm certain, with the way I did it, that my airbag is fully functional in the event of an accident. Which of course I hope never happens.

If you don't like it, that's your opinion. Share how you would've done it better (doubt that). However, if you want to hate on what I did to MY car, Fuck off. Thanks! :)

There are only two parts to the airbag assembly. The charge(bomb) and the actual bag itself which is attached to the vinyl part. There is no way to separate the two without ruining the airbag. If you want to try, you can but know that a brand new Scion airbag retails for about $650. Take a look at the picture, that pink part is the actual bag which is nicely packed in there and right behind the vinyl.

While I do wish there was/is a more cost effective way to do the change, it really seems as though this is the only way to SAFELY do it. Please let us know if you discover another way man.

Your right, there is no way this is going to get any cheaper. The bomb is not the most expensive part, the airbag is...

I still say it is worth it, to get the 86 look. I am definitely going to do it, if I get a FR-S...

There is already a write up on that. Technically that red part is supposed to be a fog light, not a brake light. Just FYI.

I haven't done it, but when I get the front fog lights, I will make the rear fog work as a fog light though.

I agree with the OP, the car should have been a Toyota and is a Toyota (or a Subiyota). There is nothing wrong with him wanting to have it badged the way it comes everywhere else. It is not like he is putting lambo badges on it.

That bag looks awesome, if I didn't have other mods I want more it would be on the short list.

Car looks great.

Looks much better in person but that's not the point. I've completely rebadged my car. Emblems, wheel caps, interior, it would look completely stupid to do all that yet still have a Scion emblem on the steering wheel. And I'm not going to do some half-assed job of trying to put a Toyota T emblem in the place of the Scion badge. I've seen it done, looks like total crap. So the 86/GT-86 came with what I got, and that's what I did. Keeps it clean, keeps it original. :)

Regardless...my point was to keep it OEM spec. No Toyota 86/GT-86 comes with a "T" emblem in the steering wheel. So I wasn't going to do anything other than the Original 86 airbag. However if that's what works for you...do it! Ultimately it's your car.

This is an awesome mod. Thank you!
Monogram to GT86 is where it's at!

Where are people purchasing this from? The only place I could find was nigel-jdm, but it does not show the part #. Would like to get the direct dual-stage replacement SU003-03413

Hey, did you ever find out where to get the dual stage bag from? I'm in the same pit and I can't figure out where to get this airbag 😔

did you blow yours? if your swapping airbags, just move the charge to the new airbag.

This is not necessary. All you need to do is install the bomb into the new airbag cover. I recently purchased for 400 GBP from the UK on ebay. The seller has 4 still for sale, all taken from new cars stripped and converted to track.

seems like a waste of money to me

I have now successfully installed my GT86 airbag. The install was so easy.

Disclaimer:
Follow my steps below at your own risk. I am not responsible for any damage to your vehicle or personal injury resulting from incorrect installation. Please do so carefully and ensure to hook up the new airbag identical to the original.

#1 Disconnect negative battery terminal
#2 Using flathead screwdriver push pins in on left, right and underside of steering wheel to release each clipped section of the airbag
#3 Disconnect orange and black terminals and ground wire and the airbag is free
#4 Unscrew bomb from Scion airbag and reuse nuts to attach to GT86 airbag in the same orientation (ensure the bomb is fastened tightly)
#5 Attach color coded terminals accordingly and ensure to reconnect the ground wire
#6 Firmly push airbag into steering wheel to connect airbag at push pins points (I pushed at all three clip points to ensure airbag was completely clipped in)
#7 Reconnect negative battery terminal
#8 Start car to ensure airbag warning does not come on
#9 Installation complete: Enjoy your GT86 authenticity
