Kuhmo Ecsta PS31
 

Does anyone have any experience with these tires or Kuhmo's in general? Searched and didnt find much and reviews on tirerack are kind of lacking too as they seem to be a new tire.

Stock size 215/45r17 are a smoking deal at Walmart or Simpletire.com for only $57 each.

would be for daily driving summer use and some tracks days, otherwise stock setup.

Seems too good to be true for the price for a UHP from a decent manufacturer.

I have Kuhmo's on my other car, an SUV, and they are fine, but average. In my opinion, on a sports car I think of the tires as the most important thing you can buy because it affects handling, stopping, and ride quality in both dry and wet scenarios. On an SUV with average power, Kuhmo's are just fine For our sports car, I'd want the best I could afford. If you are going to track your car, don't buy anything but the best, if for no other reason, safety. I changed my Primacies to PS4S the day I took delivery of my car. But it is expensive to do so -- about $800 in my case. By the way, I got a better deal on these tires from my local Discount Tire store than TireRack.

In that "tire performance" category, which doesn't mean much really, I'd just pay a little more($12 a tire) and get the Firehawk Indy 500.
It's rated the best tire in that category and for good reasons. I went from MPSS to those and would never go back not even if the MPSS
were the same price or even cheaper than the Indy 500s. And we all know how great everybody thinks the MPSS are. I feel like a Firestone salesman
every time I say this but they are better in every way that the MPSS I had prior. Grip is tons better(not sure why since the MPSS treadwear ratings is lower),
quieter, look better IMO, and by a massively huuuuge margin last longer. I am past a year now and they still look new. By two years, the MPSS were way gone,
sliding everywhere and never had the grip that the Firestone Indy 500s have.

Kumho used to be some of the best tires for track and autocross. Not sure how they fare now, but just because they are inexpensive does not mean they are bad.

Never said they were bad, only that they are not the best sports car tire. In fact, I agree with you, that Kumho's can be fairly good. Also, I didn't mean they wouldn't be acceptable on our car, only that they are not the very absolute best. In fact, I would probably equate the better rated Kumho's to the OEM Primacies. And, I would certainly buy Kumho's for other purposes. FYI, I would say those OEM Michelin Primacies were not the best for this car either. If you are judging for track and autocross, you may well be right as that is different criteria. I haven't done the research on what is the best track tire for this car. Some of you that do track your cars would know better...

Well I am going to give them a shot. 57 a tire was too tempting. Will report back after I put some miles on them.

I'll second the vote for the Firehawk Indy 500. Incredible tire. Ridiculously cheap too. I have them on my daily, a C350 4matic Sport and have been incredibly impressed with them.


Kumho's, on the other hand, I had on my old Celica all-trac AWD. They were very skittish in the rain. Couldn't believe any tire could make an AWD car feel THAT unsafe. Unreal, really.


** Note: Make sure you get the normal 'Indy 500' version and NOT the 'wide oval' - it's a completely different tire.

I gave the Indy 500 a good look, reviews on tire rack are really positive as well. I'll probably give them a shot next after the Kuhmo's.

I had some kind of kuhmo ecsta on a vehicle before. Worst tires I have ever had. I have stayed away from them since. That was probably 15 years ago at least though...

But you should know it's always a compromise between Ride comfort (quietness) / Dry & Wet grip / Treadwear

Need new tires as well.
What tire pressures were you running in those Kumho Ecsta PS31 in the rain?

No idea.

I do know several who think running low tire pressures improves grip even in the rain. I see conflicting reviews on Kumho Ecsta PS31 on the internet regarding wet grip. Some say they're outright dangerous. Some others, including Tirerack & Kumho's website, claim 8+/10 ratings. So I wonder if running low pressures has anything to do with the poor ratings.
