Clicking/tapping noise from front suspension, coil bind?
Today while leaving for work I noticed a sort of clicking noise from what seems to be my left front strut. Car still has stock suspension, currently at 39k miles.
It's pretty much only audible at low speeds, under 30 miles an hour. I thought it was just the dust cover for the shock rattling around at first, as it has come loose, but it seems to be clicking when I turn at low speeds around turns in parking lots and such. I came to a full stop and could hear it still while turning lock to lock. Is this a sign of coil bind, and if so, what would I do to fully diagnose/fix it? Thanks! |
Well, after a thorough investigation of everything connected to the suspension and steering rack, nothing was loose. Turns out, it was a much more stupid and simple issue: a bunch of the plastic undertray/splash guard was loose and a couple of the clips were broken/disconnected.
Re-clipped what I could and zip tied stuff together where clips were broken. Stuffed a few pieces of old rag between the bumper and undertray to dampen it and no more noise! Not sure how turning from lock to lock caused it to contact the plastic anywhere but its quiet as a mouse now. Just bumping this and updating in case anyone else runs across this. |
