Exciting stuff! Looks to be more of a reasonably priced option than the Kenwood DDX918WS, and since the buttons are on the left hand side, much more natural to use in LHD markets.

Anyone install one in a twin yet? Trying to figure out if its plug and play or if I'll require a Metra harness from AutoHarnessHouse in addition to their 28 pin harness and USB plug.

EDIT: Since I've gotten some questions on it, all the buttons on the headunit are in fact physical buttons, and not capacitive. I falsely stated in the thread that they were capacitive (this was before I installed it in my car), and that is incorrect.

EDIT 2: Now that I have the unit installed and all of the issues sorted out, this is what you need for this headunit to make it a plug and play affair.

EDIT 3: 2022 Update! Updating this based off of AHH website updates, who have now added the Canadian-Specific 2017 harness onto their harness selection.
  • The head unit

  • A wiring harness from AutoHarnessHouse. Select the Pioneer Direct Wire Harness (Option 2)
The website has now been updated to include the Canadian 2016 and 2017 BRZs in their harness selection. This is because 2016 and 2017 Canadian cars (like mine) retained the FujitsuTen nav instead of switching over to the Starlink unit, so the harness pinouts are different. Make sure if you have a Canadian 2016-2017 BRZ to select BRZ (Canadian) on the model drop-down. You'll see the struggle I went through later in this thread when this wasn't implemented. You're welcome!

  • Steering wheel controls for the 2017 can be retained by using the wiring harness that comes with the head unit! You do not need any additional control boxes (Axxess AWSC-1 for example). The buttons can be programmed right on the head unit.

Here’s what it looks like installed:

Looks like no one has bought one yet, but it does look like a nice solution. I've had a few Pioneer radios past (and current) and they tend to perform without issue.

Why are all these 200mm units never available in the US?

I want to know this too

JBezugs 07-17-2018 03:35 PM

As an update, I’ve ordered this head unit!

To go with it, I ordered a harness from autoharnesshouse.com which will make installing this head unit a full plug and play affair; it consists of the 28 pin harness, USB adapter, Metra adapter to Pioneer direct wire harness, and AM/FM antenna adapter to retain the following:
-Backup camera funtionality
-Auxiliary inputs
-Reverse Gear Signal
-Vehicle Speed SIgnal
-E-brake Signal
-OEM speaker amplifier
-Speaker connections
-Power/Ground connections
-Illumination Power
-Console USB port
-AM/FM Radio

I’ll update everyone when it comes in with regards to the install.

FRSBRZGT86FAN 07-17-2018 08:19 PM

Please do! Android auto seems like a must have now adays, having google maps instead of some other form of nav is dope

HawaiianMike 07-18-2018 09:58 AM

I would like to see this solution done aswell + what it takes to get internet running. I've seen some solutions but a lot of them make me cringe.

Hope it goes well!

I picked it up for 700 CAD (it’s $539 USD IIRC) on eBay.

if it's not much to ask, can you try usb hub on your unit? because only one usb port is really a deal breaker for me, i want to connect my music library on a HD and also able to use CarPlay which require physical usb connection.

I think I may have a USB hub lying around; I can give it a shot once I install the headunit and I will post here.

Got a pic of it installed? The buttons and the price of the Kenwood aren't great but it does look nicer than most head units.

Hey Andrew! Just waiting for it to come in. If it’s on time, I’ll most likely do the install next weekend.

Juzzotec 07-20-2018 04:25 AM

I've had this unit since this released in Aus, pretty nice for the price. I cant fault it at all

Do you have any pictures of it installed?

mabviper 07-20-2018 12:10 PM

I'm also interested in this :). DIY table thing is not appealing anymore, lol. I'd like to know if you needed to buy other connectors to integrate it to the car. Thanks

I purchased a kit from autoharnesshouse which includes the 28 pin harness, USB adapter, Metra adapter to Pioneer direct wire harness, and AM/FM antenna adapter to retain the following, fully plug-and-play style:
-Backup camera funtionality
-Auxiliary inputs
-Reverse Gear Signal
-Vehicle Speed SIgnal
-E-brake Signal
-OEM speaker amplifier
-Speaker connections
-Power/Ground connections
-Illumination Power
-Console USB port
-AM/FM Radio

The only thing other than that I had to purchase was the Axxess ASWC1, since the 17+ BRZ has steering wheel controls which I'd like to retain.

Head unit came in yesterday, and needless to say I am excited. Harness should be here today, so look for a full install this weekend!

This headunit has Android Auto via. USB only; same with CarPlay at the moment.

Pioneer AVH-ZL5150 - New LHD 200mm Head Unit w/ CarPlay and Android Auto!

Harness has arrived and everything looks good; however an omission on the 28 pin harness seems to be the connections on pin 21, 22 and 23 for the steering wheel controls, as only the 2017+ vehicles have it.

Does anyone know what style of male pin goes into this 28 pin harness? I’ll have to go to Sayal on Sunday and pick up some extra pins to connect the Axxess interface to the proper pins on the 28 pin harness. Picture below for reference:

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/201...84523eb7e0.jpg

EDIT: I’m a bonehead and had the connector flipped. Ignore me! :bonk:

What was your total cost for the head unit and harness? It looks a lot better in your pic vs the stock photo!

Total cost for me all in was about $850 Canadian, mind you I paid a little extra in shipping and conversion costs.

Total USD cost would be $569 for the head unit and $100 for the complete wiring harness package.

slizoth 07-27-2018 07:18 PM

Looks like a great head unit, I don't think I can justify much more than $250 for just a head unit myself. I need to replace the stock speakers still...

tehShirt 07-27-2018 08:58 PM

@JBezugs which harness kit did you pick from autoharnesshouse? I recently used their "whole kit" for a pioneer radio, and didn't have to add any pins in order to correctly solder in the AWSC-1 from Metra.

Also, do you know if the volume controls are physical buttons or touch sensitive?

JeremyR 07-27-2018 09:09 PM

are you able to remove the pioneer logo from the front??

I’m a bonehead, I had the connector flipped. :bonk: Did you use the small connector they left for the maestro unit for the AWSC-1?

The volume controls on the pioneer unit look to be touch sensitive.

EDIT: They are not capacitive (touch sensitive) buttons as initially stated here. They are infact physical (clicky) buttons!

That's the instructions I used to wire the ASWC-1 into the harness. I can pop my radio out and take pictures if it helps.

And that's kind of a bummer about the captive volume control. Hopefully it's responsive!

Headunit install is “complete” for now. There are quite a few plugs that the harness/head unit doesn’t seem to use, which is interesting.

I have two issues:

The Axxess AWSC-1 isn’t detecting my car. It is detecting my headunit, but it thinks the wires are disconnected from my car. I may have flipped the pins. I will have to rewire this later this week.

The backup camera isn’t working. The reverse trigger is working on the headunit, however I get no image from the backup camera on the headunit. I had it plugged into the wrong input initially on the headunit so I swapped it to the proper “RC” input on the Pioneer. It still doesn’t work. I ran out of patience currently as I have a very early day tomorrow, so I will have to deal with it later in the week. Anyone have any tips?

tehShirt 07-29-2018 10:56 PM

You can select your car and radio by plugging the ASWC into the computer and using the Metra software. I ended up doing the manual programming after this, as I wanted different function for certain buttons.

For the camera issue, you may need to go to the settings for the camera and toggle between the battery/ground options for the picture to display.

Vanilla Bear 07-29-2018 11:00 PM

If I had to take a guess it would be that the headunit is sending 12v to the camera and the camera only takes 6v. My Kenwood unit had this happen and I just used a voltage dropper attached at the camera end to make sure the camera only got 6v. Works great now. This one specifically https://www.qualitymobilevideo.com/ax-cam6v.html. Hope that helps!

Juzzotec 07-30-2018 05:53 AM

Sorry for the late reply, have had this installed since release Pioneer ZL5150BT :)
Half the price of the Kenwood 200mm unit but just as good in every way.

So, as a follow up:

For the AWSC-1, I'll attempt to program it manually using the Metra software and see if it works.

As for the backup camera, it may be down to me not grounding the video ground cable, as it was mentioned to only ground as required. I'll give that a shot tonight and update you guys.

Otherwise, the headunit has been a joy to use. Super responsive, and although the volume controls look to be capacitive, they are actually hard buttons, which is nice!

I'm going to Auto-EQ and TA tonight as well (I have the EQ mic from the DEH-80PRS in my old car, I had quite the system in there!).

I'll keep everyone in the loop!

mabviper 07-30-2018 11:09 AM

Woo that's good to hear. Do you use RaceChrono Android app? Do you know if it works in Android auto mode?

@JBezugs check the camera polarity settings before you change physical wiring. My camera did not display properly until I changed the setting to "Battery"

I flipped between the two settings; neither battery nor ground seems to have worked for me. Hopefully the video ground fixed the issue.

Interesting. I don't think I had to ground my camera, but I could be remembering incorrectly. Hopefully you get it working. The radio looks really nice, wish I had seen this one back in May.

Have you verified the backup camera is enabled on the headunit? I ask because when I installed the Pioneer in our Suburban I ended up doing a lot of troubleshooting only to have the fine folks at Crutchfield tell me that the cameras are turned off by default and you have to go in and enable them. Sure enough, that was my problem. Exact same symptoms.
