FRS 2015 Cold Start Sound.

Hello Everyone!

I recently bought a used 2015 FRS. This is the first car i have ever owned, and I really don't know to much about cars!

So far, the car seems to run fine;however, the car sounds weird for the first minute after start up. The car sounds loud and rough .

At first I thought this was normal, but a friend of mine suggests otherwise

The car does have a few mods on it ( from previous owner)

The car does have a Borla Exausht and an LED fog light. These are the only mods i can tell( or what the dealer stated)

I have attached a .oggs sound file of a cold start. At the end i start reving the car a bit to give a sense of what it sounds like..

Is this normal, or do i have a lemon/Damged car from previous mods??

Stock tune these cars have loud cold startup especially with modified exhausts, high rev like 1800 rpm and loud droney exhaust normal. can be removed with tuning

100% normal.

The cold start behavior has a purpose. It is to further reduce emissions by immediately preheating the primary catalytic converter. It does this by setting the spark timing much later than normal so that the fuel is still burning as it hits the cat.

Isn't this counter intuitive though? Have you ever stood behind the car when it's doing it's high rev cold start routine? It smells absolutely disgusting and stinks up the entire area around the car within a 20+ foot radius.

Seems like it's belting out exhaust emissions at a higher than normal volume & velocity during this time, thus polluting more.

You would smell the same thing without the late timing. It still has to enrich the mixture to even run. As long as we have gasoline engines, they will always need a choke.

The genius is that the same dirty flame now extends through the headers to get the cat red hot way earlier than it normally would. That way it smells like shit for a much shorter time.

In other news, E85 cold starts are disgusting. Seriously the fumes and stench are so bad, worse than regular 91 if that's even possible.

Well, Clipdat, it's a good thing you weren't around the back of a car when one of these fired up from a cold start .. :eyebulge:

I've smelled them at classic car shows. Shit literally burns your eyes. So noxious and horrible.
