thinking out loud...
so I ended up getting a 2015+wrx factory turbo for free the other day, in good condition no less. anyway, im thinking of making a "custom" turbo kit out of it as a long term project.
model is GARRETT MGT2259S, cute little twin scroll unit. I like that its a smaller, twin scroll turbo for spooling purposes.. even if it is all at awkward angles as far as air in/out/exhaust side etc. i bet i could get a custom turbo manifold made up, something similar to JDL's uel manifold for rumbly noises (is a MUST lolol) everything else could pretty much be tuned via ecutek like any other turbo kit i imagine. for pump gas probably run it around 8-10 psi or so. anyway, just sharing my idea in hopes of sparking discussion, wondering what you all think? i know a few people here have made their own kit and im sure most of you know more on the subject than i do. :bonk::bonk::bonk: :party0030: |
particularly wondering what you all think about running this turbo at about half the boost levels as the wrx it was designed for.. you guys think that would cause any issues ?

I'm not sure if it would fit, but some kits use Garrett turbos, so you might be able to get a kit minus the turbo since you already have one.
Seems that the cost in labor with making a custom kit would negate any savings. You might be best off trying to sell this turbo that someone gave you, and then buy a used kit. The combination would make for decent savings. |
its not really about saving money, its more about intentnionally using a smaller turbo for spooling / response reasons. im sure physically it would fit with the right manifold, few turbo kits run twin scroll to begin with and most turbo kits are using larger turbos than this one
im a technician and would be doing all the install myself, would need custom turbo manifold and down pipe, intercooler kit and that about it really. already have ecutek so would just need to pay my preferred tuner, just the cost of custom dyno tune. but again, the goal isnt to save money, the goal is turbo responsiveness :) |

Sometimes you can unbolt the compressor housing from the center section, re-orient it, apply new sealer and bolt it back up.
This could improve the 'awkward angles' issue a bit :) |
